I think it's a pretty natural tendency to hoard things. I live in one of those suburban neighborhoods where everyone keeps their lawns immaculate, but many garages are so full of junk that they can't keep their cars in them. Moves really do force you to keep it to a minimum. We moved almost every year for so long that we've gotten in the habit of throwing away most things we don't need even though we're more settled now. I get really stressed about having a lot of clutter around me--it made me a bad roommate in college because I would just pile up my roommate's junk and dump it in his room. As a kid I was different. I used to keep most of my toys in bed with me. It got so bad that I hardly had any room on my mattress to sleep on. One day my dad got so mad about it that he swept it all onto the floor and told me to clean it up before he threw it all away. That was the last I ever had more than 2 or 3 toys in my bed at one time. My kids now tend that way, but I limit them to just a couple at a time.
I was listening to an NPR feature a few years back where they were talking about hoarding. It's particularly bad in older generations (especially those that went through WWII). Apparently it's not wholly uncommon for someone to get crushed or trapped under a stack of magazines/newspapers that fell over.

I was leaving Bob's Big Boy the other day with the fam and my girl was like "omg, look it's a hoarder" I started laughing and she was like backup, backup look. I looked in and all you could see was books on top of books on top of papers on top of trash, it was so gross and it was on full display from her sliding glass door. She had so much sh!t all over the place that she had to put her xmas tree outside (stll fully decorated and lit). Just insane

I have seen people who horde and it is very strange. You know the hard truth is that we army builders are just like them. I have 50 Neo Vipers, that makes me a horder. I horde silly little toy guys. Oh no. what am I to do, Oh am a horder? Then again who cares? I am happy and in the end, when I pass on, and the world goes on with out me, who will care that I horded 50 little plastic guys? Hording is nothing more than a reflection into my sole. " I collect therefor I am" (Let the hording begin)

Whoa! That has got to be an awful thing to realize that you are a hoarder. I have seen that show and often I wonder where the line is drawn between collecting and hoarding.

I think my Father in Law is a hoarder. He likes to call himself a pack rat, but it's definitely much more than that. He was just down visiting for the last 11 days or so (he lives in Indiana) and so much of the stuff that he bought while he was here, he took back with him and trust me they're not souvenir type things. For example over the years whenever he comes down he always buys a couple boxes of wine and when he finishes them he takes the plastic bag/pouch out, rinses it out and then puts it in his suitcase to take back with him.
He said he has over 50 of them in his garage that he keeps saving, insisting that at some point he will wind up using them for something. Also he saves every cork from any bottle that we open, every ticket or pass...really just about any useless thing you can imagine. He found a button one time on the sidewalk and picked it up and put it in his pocket and his reasoning is always the same, which is he thinks it will all be needed at some point down the road. Finally as luck would have it, while he was here an episode of Hoarders came on A&E and at first he just kept saying "Thats not me, I'm not that bad" and we both were telling him it doesn't start off that bad, but eventually it gets that way. The only good thing out of all of this is that towards the last day of his trip, he admitted he might have some cleaning to do when he gets back home. I seriously hope he does
