I had to buy some stamps today so I went to the post office to talk with the nice Swedish lady at the counter. But then I remembered they were closed so I just bought a book of stamps from the machine.
Usually I'd have enough change to just pay the exact price but since my heart was so set to talk with the nice old lady all I had was a $20. So I reluctantly put the $20 in the machine and while I waited for the stamps to drop out I was trying to find where the dollar change would come out when I heard a succession of 'thunks'. And when I scooped out the change I had a handful of gold dollar coins. I had no idea these were still being made and I knew even less that there were now presidential editions. And after a quick researching it's a new coin series akin to the state quarter series. I've been subconsciously collecting all of the state quarters so I wanted to get into this one when I remembered that almost nobody gives change in dollar coins. Is there any way to get dollar coins other than the bank? It sort of takes the fun out of it just to have it readily available. And I like having a pocketful of dollar coins, every time I scoop some out I feel like a pirate or Van Pelt from Jumanji.

The only place I know where I can get a readily available supply of them is the snack machine in the break room at work. I know when they started these way back when with the Sackagewa (Good god I think I butchered the spelling there ) coins, Wal-Mart had a big push of using them. I think vending machines will probably be your best bet though.
I too enjoy using the gold coins especially at ren fairs and such |

I figured machines would be my best bet, the only problem I see with that is if it doesn't have dollar coins I could be stuck with 40 quarters

Sometimes you can get these coins at your local bank, just ask the teller. They are releasing 4 presidential dollar coins a year until all of the presidents have been released.
If you are really into collecting, and you want to make sure that you get them all, you can always buy them in a set from the U.S. Mint. They come in a few ways. You can get uncirculated coins from the Denver and Philadelphia mints, and even better are the proof sets from the San Francisco mint. The coins with the "S" mint mark are not released into our spending money, so these can only be acquired directly from the mint. They are nicer coins anyways. Go to www.usmint.gov for more info. |

It's easy really, just come on up to Canada. Dollar coins aplenty. Except we call them loonies.
