I'm a huge combative sports (boxing and MMA) fan, and Pacquaio is my favourite (active) fighter.
I think Cotto is going to be a real test for him though, and it's not a gimme like a lot of people think. Cotto is a bona fide natural welterweight in his prime, with pop in both hands and quality technical skills. From interviews and articles, Pacquaio has to eat 5 meals and drink two high protein shakes a day just to stay at 145 lbs. (his frame, I think, maxes out at super lightweight/junior welterweight), so I don't know how much consistent power he'll be carrying into the ring on fight night. I know he beat De La Hoya into submission fighting at welterweight, but I really think Golden Boy was faded and pretty much overtrained for that fight. The real difference here, I think, is going to be ring strategy. I'm not sure Pacquiao can plow through Cotto the way he did with De La Hoya and Hatton. Cotto's only been knocked out once (a TKO at the hands of Margarito, who was probably using loaded gloves at the time). But with Roach in his corner, and the relatively inexperienced Joe Santiago in Cotto's, I think Pacquiao has the edge, as long as he doesn't try to slug it out with the bigger and stronger Cotto. All he has to do is use his superior speed and quickness to get in, score with a flurry or two, and then get out of Cotto's range. I'm not one to make fight predictions, but if pressed, I'd say Pacquaio by unanimous decision. Of course, I'd be over the moon if Pacquaio actually wins by KO. Make no mistake, though... Cotto is a very live dog in this fight. Quote:

It's sort of unfortunate that boxing isn't more popular in the mainstream sports consciousness in North America these days. We're living at a time where real sports history is being made, and what Pacquiao is attempting to do, if he succeeds, is not likely to be replicated any time soon (or ever... I think his ability to put on body mass and not just maintain, but actually increase his relative speed, agility, and strength at the same time is one of those once-in-a-generation things). Manny Pacquiao wins...12th round TKO, though I think the bout should've been stopped by the 10th round.

With that win, Pacquaio basically assures his place not just in the Boxing Hall of Fame, but I think he's now one of the legitimate all-time greats. Seven recognized titles in seven weight divisions. Un-freaking-believable. Last edited by zuludelta; 11-15-2009 at 02:53 AM.. |

Great fight. A bit too one-sided to be Fight of the Year material, but an entertaining bout nonetheless. I agree that Cotto's corner should have thrown in the towel at the end of the 10th, but at the same time, Cotto didn't want to come off looking like Pacquiao made him quit. Even Pacquiao looked like he was asking referee Kenny Bayless to stop the fight in the 11th round (there was a point where he dropped his hands and motioned at the ref), because letting Cotto absorb all that pummeling for the sake of his being able to say he went "out on his own terms" was unnecessary. Cotto was classy throughout the build-up to this fight, all the way to the post-fight interview, and even though he lost, I think he managed to gain a lot of fans with his show of heart and grit.
With that win, Pacquaio basically assures his place not just in the Boxing Hall of Fame, but I think he's now one of the legitimate all-time greats. Seven recognized titles in seven weight divisions. Un-freaking-believable.
