Some of my friends have noticed that I haven’t been posting as much as I’m used to and it’s been because of offline life. Yeah, one of those posts. So here’s the long and short of it.
Short Part. Divorce. I filed for divorce from my wife of 5 years at the end of July. Everything has to be finalized in October and we’re both losing a lot; however, we have no kids, and I had to do what was right instead of what was easy. Promotion. In August, I was finally promoted from my secretary job to a health educator at our local health department. So basically, I’m looking at this as a rebirth, don’t worry for my fellow comic nerds this will not be followed up by a Sinestro Corp War or a Blackest Night…I think. So after October I should be back as an active member and posting meaningful posts on topics that begin and end with the word Cool. The Long Part (The Train Wreck) I’ve posted before about how my wife doesn’t feel strongly about my hobby, well that outlook has been towards a lot of my life since I became involved. In the beginning, I took great offense to it, and would argue with her til the wee hours of the morning and go in late for work. Then as our relationship went along, she promised me she would change and I developed a thicker skin yet would still argue with her til the wee hours of the morning and go in to work late. People will vouch for me when I say this, I’m a nice and loveable guy, and will go out of my way for someone, I’ll give the shirt off my back and if I have to offer my pants (usually I’ve never had to give said shirt, b.i.d.,). This past May a friend of mine had back surgery, when he got back to his apartment after being released from the hospital, his roommate kicked his ass out, and he didn’t have anywhere to go. After asking the wife, if I went to bring him to our house, I drove an hour south to Dearborn Heights to pick him, his dog and his stuff up. The wife and I had a heart to heart the next day and agreed that he could stay for the next 8 weeks while he recovered from his surgery. Well that never happened. One week after staying he supposedly wore his welcome out and the wife made it explicitly clear that he was no longer welcome, yet if I talked to him about changing certain behaviors, he could stay. I tried to make time to talk to him and never got the chance because the wife sabotaged my every move with asking to spend time for everything and I mean EVERYTHING which was completely out of character for her. She became more belligerent and started verbally and physically abusing me more than usual and making it clear that my friend was not welcome in HER house. Not ours, HERS. During the first weekend of June, I moved my friend out of our house, he doped up on his painkillers and we drove him to his mom’s place in Tennessee, TEN HOURS AWAY!. Words were exchanged on the cell phone between my friend, my wife and myself. When I came back home, I fought with her from that Sunday til the end of June. I sat down and thought about what I wanted in my life, and how I’ve been treated by her and how I treated her. It was a very enlightening heart to heart. I made phone calls with my most trusted friends, I approached the wife different ways and never made any progress with her and finally at the end of July, two weeks after our anniversary, I handed down the death blow to our marriage and broke my wife’s heart. Insert season premiere of greys anatomy kuhbler ross five stages of grief monologue. I have my moments of depression and then come back to acceptance. Since I’ve filed, people have noticed a positive change in me, and I’ve enjoyed the reduced stress level. Which I can thank to my promotion. My co-worker vacated her position in June to go work for a private health organization and after a month of will they/won’t they talks concerning the economy and the health departments budget, they finally notified me that they were filling the position with yours truly. I’ve been at the job for a month now and it’s a lot of work but its totally worth it. I’ve been updating the health department’s website regarding novel H1N1 flu (Genesee County Health Department - Better Life Through Better Health), on top of that I’ve been running the health information/public education branch for H1N1. The HI/PE branch is a one man show and I’ve been enjoying the learning experience that has come from it. I get to work with my co-workers in a different capacity as a professional instead of a secretary (yes, apparently there is still a negative stereotype/stigma that still exists.) so I have new sets of stressors and its nothing compared to what I had to deal with several months ago. Plus, I get to go out into the pubic and educate people on a myriad range of topics instead of when they call the office and I tell them the difference between the services that county (we tell you to pick up your yard, cuz your dog crap stinks) and the city do (garbage man didn’t pick up the garbage). So I am basically looking at this as Cavbeast rebirth for me. I became an uncle at the end of May, I’m 30 years old with a masters degree, a new job that will launch me into better job opportunities as I gain experience and soon to be single. I can’t wait to make more friends on this site, and hopefully find someone that will respect me and what I collect for who and what I am. And don’t worry my fellow comic nerds this will not be followed up by a Cavbeast: Sinestro Corp War or a Cavbeast: Blackest Night…I think. So after October I should be back as an active member and posting meaningful posts on topics that begin and end with the word Cool. Thanks for reading, it was very cathartic to get this out and Theory of a Deadman and Pussycat Dolls can finally stop being the current soundtrack to my life. |

Work.
Well, I did get to go to Wizard World Chicago. ;) But I agree, divorce isn't easy, and you needed to move on.

This summer, I was severely injured and almost died. My spleen was lacerated and I was bleeding internally, so I spent several days in the I.C.U. Long and short of it, after a very slow recovery and some heartfelt discussions with my family, I have quit drinking, cut back my hours at work to part-time, and enrolled back in school to pursue my degree in English and literature. Oh yeah, and I collected a lot of toys.

Your story sounds sort of like an indie film. Why am I picturing you as Zach Braff?
Anyway, I've come to the conclusion that children need to be in school all year while adults need three months off. |
