DC Comics Recommendations?

Fellow Tankers,

I am a longtime reader of several different types of comics, but one area I've only recently started to delve into is the whole realm of DC super-hero/JLA type stuff, and I really, really like some of what I've read. Which is, to wit; Identity Crisis and Tornado's Path. I've also just finished Crisis on Infinite Earths, which was pretty brutal.

Note, if it has Frank Miller, Alan Moore, or Neil Gaiman's name on the cover and DC published it, I've probably read it. I've also read some Elseworlds, like Gotham by Gaslight and Red Son. What I'm looking for are recommendations of DC, especially Justice League (or the individual characters thereof) that are good reading, good art, hopefully in TPB form (or easily caught up to at my friendly local comic shop) and hopefully anywhere near as good as Identity Crisis or Tornado's Path.

DC is so freakin' huge I don't know where to really start trying to enjoy it, so hopefully somewhere here can help me out with some good recommandations.

I'm not really a DC guy, more of a Vertigo type...but I really reccomend these...(they are all graphic novels)

Superman: Secret Identity

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman:_Secret_Identity

you might think it sounds kind of lame but trust me it is not, one of the most heartfelt, and emotional stories I've ever read...

Kingdom Come

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom...8comic_book%29

I'm a sucker for Alex Ross' art, and this is just beautiful, story is really epic aswell...

Arkham Asylum: Serious House On Serious Earth

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkham_..._Serious_Earth

Scary stuff, artwork is incredible, The inmates take over the Asylum and threaten to kill everyone unless Batman meets with them...

Death of Superman

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Superman

Awesome, might look a little dated now, but the story still retains all its impact...

Robin: Year One

http://www.dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=1307

Never really liked the character, until I read this, basically it's Batman Year One only with Robin and dare I say it is just as good

plus you've got plenty of awesome Batman and Superman stuff...

The Superman/Batman stories are great (1-26 written by Jeph Loeb, 27-36 by Mark Verheiden, 37-42 by Alan Burnett, 43 by Dan Abnett, and everything since by Michael Green), all the 52 stuff, Infinite Crisis, and all the recent JLA written by Dwayne McDuffie, as well as Brad Meltzer's run on the title prior to McDuffie. A lot of DC "fans" don't like the latest Frank Miller DC project, All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder, but I love it. Also, check out Batman: Hush, available in TPBs, from Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee. Loeb's Supergirl series is good, too.

But you're right, it is huge, and there's a ton of stuff to read.

Kingdom Come is definitely already on my list, but I will make sure to be looking for all of these at the library and/or comic shop.

Thanks for the recommendations, guys. This oughta keep me busy for a while. And keep 'em coming!

Jeph Loeb's Batman work. The Long Halloween, Dark Victory and especially Hush. I also recomend the whole Cataclisim/No Man's Land run, and War Games.

Also, you might want to check out The New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke and Trinity by Matt Wagner. Both are available in TPB.

Pick up the James Robinson 90's Starman series. It's good stuff. Also try the John Ostrander 90's Spectre series. The first Superman/Batman Generations minseries by John Byrne was pretty good, but the sequels were so so IMO.

Two words, Geoff Johns. If you grew up in the late 70's and 80's then Nobody does heroes and villains any better. IMHO the best superhero writer of his generation.
