I guess people forgot about this thread. I'll share a happy retail story: One Saturday I was working in the men's dept. of this particular store. I had been helping a customer who wanted to try on clothes, and in this store, the door to the men's fitting room was locked to prevent theft. Anyways, this gentleman had tried on a bunch of stuff, and when he was done, thanked me for my help. He then asked if I liked hockey. I said sure, and he gave me 2 tickets to the Univ. of ME hockey team's game that night (they've made it to the championships a couple times)! I didn't tell anyone in the store, but on my break called a buddy of mine to see if he could go. He couldn't but his brother went instead. Our team lost, but we had a good time.

So I was throwing out the cardboard when I was working at ROSS, when I find a box full of paper stuffing and baby rats. I'm like, awwww cuuuute! So I take the box upstairs to ask the manager what to do, box uncovered of course!
I get to the customer Service Desk where he is and showed him the box, and his face seemed to want to express about 10 things at once! Rage that I brought them up there, disgust because he's a pansy, fear that the customers would see, helplessness because one of the major muckity-mucks was prowling the store at the moment, it was hilarious xD
So he's stammering trying to figure out whether he wants to yell at me or be nice to not draw attention, and I'm just playing with the things while he decides, lol. Then he starts whispering Go downstairs! Go downstairs! You can stay down there just sweeping for the rest of the day if you want, just get them out of here!
So I sort-of swept for about 4 hours that day, talking to co-workers, doing nothing xD
Oh, and don't work at camping stores, DO NOT WORK AT CAMPING STORES. They have the worst customers possible, everyone takes themselves waaaay too seriously.

Giving the finger to the computer is the only benefit to my job after calls like these, mind you, but here it goes.
Call center work, incoming calls. Well it's not such a bad gig, not including the ghetto loud mouthed row on the other side of the cubicle wall.
I had a Japanese caller on the line who could not understand it takes 4-6 weeks for our packages to reach Japan from NJ. He would try to listen and understand and repeat it back to me, and when I asked him if there were any other questions...he asked the same question again and again and again!!! This guy wanted to be a doctor, and his English proficiency scores were something like 32 out of 120! For God's sake, that's not even high enough for Cluck U!
Anyway, after 30 minutes (and you know your voice is different when you are actually smiling) and my face turned to a frown and I just wanted to tell the guy to *!^@ off, he hung up in mid-sentence. So I thought a 2 minute break would calm me down, and when I get back on the phone, it's him AGAIN!!! C'mon man, read between the damn lines! My boss took over the call (as my patience was gone) and he was on the phone with him for another 25 minutes...
Back story: My ultimate pet peeve is if you're in America, speak f'n English. Now, knowing that, what testing department do they keep bringing me back to when my temp assignment ends EVERY time? This makes 2 years now and being burned out at my last gig of 6 years at Comcast doesn't help matters...the one for English proficiency testing! Aaahhh!!!
Yeah, I could take prozac or what-not. But my wife doesn't want me on it, because I get suicidal and depressed ON the meds. Being off them means my level of patience on and off the job dwindles down incredibly fast and the only cure (at work) is to bring in my daily dose of plastic-crack that makes me appear childish.
Sorry, had to rant and rave sometime, right?

I am gonna post in this thing with the hopes of reviving it, oh man did these stories make my day reading them!
I work at a hotel, not retail but you still deal with people at their worst about 50% of the time at best.
Had a guy check in to the hotel at around 10:30 AM (check in is after 3:00 PM), call the front desk to demand that we go to the store and buy him a razor and some shaving cream.
He then comes down to the lobby where we have coffee for sale, drinks several cups, makes a huge mess and then leaves without paying for anything.
After he left I found out that he was some author and that he had gone to the local bookstore to sign all of the copies of his book on the shelves without asking the people at the store first. Apparently you cannot return "autographed" books no matter how many of them don't sell.

I am currently thinking of going back to retail but just the thought sucks....
I had an interview at a toystore and it was awful. The lady was nice but I was like damn, my old office was 3 times bigger than hers with a flat screen and video game hook up. I made twice as much as the store manager and I was considered a peon.
The only one worse than that was at a company we will call bullseye. A kid was trying to be a show off and I had to hide my smile multiple times through the interview.

I have a bit different retail story...
back in college, I was working as a manager at a sporting goods store (Brendamours - if you from the Ohio area)... anyway - one day a store manager from another store comes in (a female). She has her younger sister with her... who happens to be smokin' hot.
Well, its mid-summer, and the sister is wearing short jogging shorts and a tiny tank top. She asks me to help her try on shoes. Meanwhile - the older sister (a manager at another store) is hanging back watching me the whole time. So, I've got the super-hot, flirty, 18-year-old bending over in front of me, and I'm helping her with shoes while trying "not" to look straight down her shirt... while her older sister is standing in the corner just staring at my eyes - making sure I'm not doing anything wrong.
To this day, I still think they did that JUST to have fun with me. I hate older sisters!

Okay I'm 37 and have worked in the following retail since I was 15.
-KMart (2 locations)
-Brooks Brothers (catalog)
-Print Shops (4 differant ones)
So I have a few of these stories.
I'll start off with...
The Kid in the Ladies Underwear Department
Okay this one goes back to Bradlees, this was in the time where store security actually risked associates lives by including them in detaining people.
Anyway were watching this kid, on the cameras and he seems pretty dodgy, looking around nervously and just generally suspicious.
So he's in the ladies underwear department again an odd place for a teen boy to be. While there, he's picking up women's underwear and moving them to other racks or droping them under the racks...all behavior of a theif...or at least odd.
So at one point he stops behind this one rounder rack, and we can only see him from the shoulders up. Well we figure okay I bet that merch is gone when he comes from behind the rack.
But he's there for awhile...a long while...too long awhile...and he's closing his eyes...and pursing his lips...and OH MY GOD!
OH GOD HE IS!
Yes...oh young shoplifter had just upgraded himself to sex Offender!
So we all grab some rubber gloves to stop him, but of course were still keeping tape running, I mean come on you just KNOW this is gonna go from store to store, as a laugh.
And the kid finishes up, tosses the undies and makes way for the door. We net him, and the question on all of our minds HAS to be asked, "Kid why do this here?"
"Because my Mom doesn't like me doing it at home."
Which was priceless, because now being a minor that is EXACTLY who we have to call to pick him up.
Oh the laughs we had.

I worked at Men's Wearhouse the summer between high school and college. I wasn't a salesman, just an assistant. It was a particularly busy Saturday, so the assistants were selling themselves, rather than disturbing the salesmen that were helping people themselves. An older couple came in the store looking for a suit. While I was helping them, I noticed the wife was unusually quiet. Typically, the wife had more input than the husband. After some conversation and a fitting, I found out the man had cancer and was buying the suit in which he would be buried. I felt awful for the guy, and his wife. Still, though, I don't know which was worse; knowing you were going to die from cancer or knowing you were going to die from cancer and be buried in a cheap suit from the Men's Wearhouse.
