I was once in a halloween costume/party store looking for a costume with my (then) wife and step-son. My step-son and I are looking at all the cool superhero costumes, trying to figure out what he wanted to be, when this crazy old woman comes up to me and insists that I answer her questions and go around the store with her as her own personal freakin' shopper!
I tell the old bag that I don't work there, and she tells me yes I do! I'm just starring at her like the moron she is and tell her she should go to the front desk for assistance from someone who works there. She gets mad at me, saying I am talking back to her and not giving her good service. I again tell her I DON'T WORK THERE and she says she's going to report me to the manager. I told her thats a good idea, as maybe the manager can get her the help she needs. She waddles off the the front desk to "report" me to management, and my step-son looks to me and asks what her problem was. I told him that that was a reason he should NEVER work in retail!

When you go through employee training at WF they tell you that if a customer wants to return something, even if you know they're lying, you have to take it back. I was working in the fish/meat department in the morning and this woman comes in and buys a whole side of salmon, pricing around $130. Five hours later I get called to the front service desk, the woman is back with whats left of the cooked salmon, all less than half a pound, and she's screaming that I tried to kill her and her family with bad fish. She got her damn refund. There was never a point when I ever wanted to jump across a counter and strangle someone more. Why do people insist that food workers are always trying to spoil or ruin their food? Like I'm sitting in back and rubbing all the meat/fish products on the toilet or something.. |

I worked at a McDonalds located inside of a Walmart once. I only took the job because i had quit my old bank job and was starting a new office job in 3 weeks and didn't want a gap in my employment. My little brother worked there along with the usual assortment of ghetto hoodlums he hangs around with.
Well, i had probably the best work ethic of anyone there so i was made to close. One night we were closing and this older guy comes up to the counter. He was wearing a suit that was a little wrinkled and sans tie, he had grey-ish white hair and a kinda spacey look on his face. He looked really tired. So im in the "kitchen" (i use that term very loosely) when the counter chick comes up and starts complaining that some "old looser" wants free food and i need to make him leave. I go up there and he's leaning on the counter and he very politely explains that hes tired and not feeling well, can't find his wallet, and would we please give him something to eat and a cup of water. He explained that he would come in tomorrow to pay us back but he just needs to sit down a minute and maybe eat something so he would feel up to going home. Now, its close to close and we usually throw away food at the end of the day, so i figured, what the heck. He seemed sick or something, kind of out of it, so i found him some fries and a big mac and got him a cup of coffee. I brought it all up to the rail to give to him and the chick i was working with starts railing about how she got into trouble for giving away food (mind you, lots of food over a while) and she's going to report me to the manager. As i am handing the old dude his tray, i turn to tell her to pipe down i notice that the guys jacket is wet. I also notice he's leaving droplets of blood on my floor. So i ask him to sit down and i help him take off his jacket. His shirt is soaked. I called 911 and EMS rolled a bus to my location. They take him out of walmart on a stretcher and cops come to take my statement. So i come back in for my next shift and find out from a buddy of mine in the Walmart that the old dude had come in to refill a prescription and two guys had watched him, then followed him to another aisle, stabbed him and took his wallet and meds. Guy came in looking for me a month or two later to thank me for the food and help, but i had already went to my next job. My brother told him he would pass it along. Guy gave him $20 to pass along to me too, but only the thanks made it. Counter chick had reported me too. I got a written warning but i didn't really care, it was always a temp thing for me. |

Okay here is a couple from the days of working @ TRU dealing with the infamous Hot Wheels collectors.
I stocked the shelves during night crew over the Christmas season. Well one night while the store was still opened I started stocking the Hot Wheels and there was a little boy about 10 or 11 standing there, waiting to see what I put out. So I ask him if he was looking for one car or another and he told me that him and his dad collected and only needed a few more to finish up. I smiled and opened a case to fill out the pegs letting him see which ones I was putting out, and I come across a Treasure Hunt. I show it to him and ask if he had this one yet and he got all happy, and said no so I let him have it and he ran off to show his mom. He might have got ten steps away from the section when one of the normal collectors just grabs it out of his hand, says "thanks kid" and takes off toward the front of the store. Now I chase the guy down at the checkout and ask what he thinks he is doing, he goes on about how the kid put it down and he just picked it up. Well the manager comes up to see what is going on because I'm beyond pissed at this guy, so I tell him what I saw. Again the guy gives him the same BS story of finding it and that he can't believe a seasonal employee is treating him like this. Now my manager knew this guy as one of his collectors who came in and bought whole cases of HW so he sided with him. I was stunned and walked back to my dept hearing my manager tell him he was sorry for the trouble and he would talk with me. So I get back to find the kid in tears with his mother asking him what is wrong. I step in and tell her the story and say I'm sorry it happened but if she would give me a min I'll look back thru the other cases to try and find another one for him. I must have opened six cases of HW, but I found two more Treasure hunts and three more cars he didn't have. So I refilled the cases with the cars I took and walked them up to the checkout. The collector was still there talking away to the manager as kid went thru, he saw those cars and just went crazy. He was actually demanding to know where they came from, with the manager just looking at me. I shrugged and told him I just open a lucky case and got no control over how they are packed. LOL the mother called him a jerk and told the manager the only reason she would ever come back into this store again was because of me. Now these HW collectors show up in the morning, after we get a truck, lined up out the door like we are giving away free spam or something. The doors open and they charge as a single mass into the store knocking over whatever gets in their way of the HW section. Once they get there they knock cars from the pegs, pushing and shoving trying to get want they want. I say want and not need because after they checkout they go out into the parking lot to sell to the other collectors, who show up late, what they just found. Afterward they leave the HW section destroyed, cars on the floor and the display is just trashed. There are so many more to tell……..

Sharky, the scary thing is that supposedly the cops pulled walmarts cam footage to prosecute the guys and it had the whole thing on there. so that means that no one saw this on cams and he wandered around for like, close to an hour, in the walmart before coming to the mcdonalds. You'd think someone working the cams would have noticed a stabbing/mugging? Then again, blade work can be very covert if the kids knew what they were doing. I didn't see the cam footage so i couldn't do more than speculate, but it does make you think.

I'm not sure about those other stories in retail.... but after stumbling on this website : People of Walmart: a collection of all the creatures that grace us with their presence at Walmart, America's favorite store.
.... you've seen 'em once, you've seen them all.

i used to work for wally world for 8 years and 6 years of that i was the food dept.manger, and i hate dealing with the moms. wally world has a nasty habit of taking the things away that sell good, like juicy juice, man when wee took them bottles off the shelve, the moms look like they were going to kill me, i used to have the moms come up to me and asking where was the stuff and i tell them, i had one lady that was going to scatch the hell out of me, her long nails were like inches too my face, I'm soooooooooooooooo happy i don't work for them anymore, it used to be a great place to work till they hired the CEO of target to work for them , now every thing went down hill,
