i worked at a Media play during the TME run. I was in the stock room. Me and my manager received the 4 boxes that came in on 12/23, and promptly drove to the mall across the street and sold them for a nice mark up.
I worked at Burger King through high school, me and my best friend were morning openers. One day, we're predicted to be busy as all hell, and half the crew called out. So, lunch time is getting close, and our manager decides the only way we're going to get by, is by leveling a ton of food (basically making like 20 whoppers in advance). Normally there are 5 levels, each with a prescribed amount of food. Well, me and my boy proceed to make a TON of food, our manager looks at it and states "Now that's a level 6!" Me and Kev being as metal as we are, look at him and go.. "No, that's level 666, the satan level" Everyone has a good laugh all around, and we put up a sign next to the normal level board that says Satan Level!. Mind you, the customers cannot see this board, would have no idea what it was for, and could not read that sign unless they were working behind the counter. 20 minutes into lunch a priest walks into the dining room, and goes to place his order. His first question to me is, "Hey, what does that sign back there say" Talk about spooky. Here's one from non retail. Right out of school I was working tech support for an insurance company and I get a phone call. Dumbass "Hi, I'm _____ in the Texas office, and I can't get my computer to work" Me "Ok sir, i'm going to walk you through some troubleshooting techniques if you don't mind" DA "No problem, what do you need me to do?" Me "If you would, please power off your computer, turn it back on, and open windows (mind, this was back in the 3x/95 dual boot days) DA "Ok, let me put you on hold" Me --- sits there for 30 minutes --- DA "Sir?" Me "Yes" DA "There's a problem, see, we're on the 23rd floor of this building and the windows don't open up here" Me --- face, palm, finish --- Worst ID10T error ever.

At the video store, people would always ask "hey, what movies are you hiding back there?" Why would we hide movies? We don't make money that way.

I was ringing at customer service at TRU and I had a guy literally drag his rather hefty 12 year old out of the store. The kid was doing his best to stay while screaming "Its my money! I'm not leaving til I buy it!" The dad eventually got the kid off the floor and out the door but it seemed that the entire world had stopped to watch the event!
Another guy made his daughter cry because he wouldn't pay the extra $10 to buy an assembled bike. He didn't want to have to wait til the next day to pick it up, he didn't want to build it himself but didn't want to pay a service fee for someone else to do it for him.

I didn't work at TRU during TME, but at Wal-Mart in Dodge City, KS. Half of that town does not speak english, but you better believe they all got pissed when they hear out of stock on that damn thing. We used to set them on the top shelf, start them up and watch them fall, we called it Suicide Elmo. I did work at TRU when Furby came out and had the unfortunate displeasure of working Black Friday that year. I broke up at least 6 fistfights before 10 am.
These 3 are the worst experiences I have ever had, and they all happened working for the same company about a week apart. Anyone from Kansas knows of this resturant. I won't name it, but if you're from here, 2.99 ring any bells? Anyway, I had just been promoted from Crew Lead to Asst. Mgr. It was my last night at my regular store before I was transferred to my new store. I get a phone call from one of the other stores asking if I can come close that one down because they can't find the closer. I agree to do it and drive the 10 minutes across town. When I get there, now the closing manager is missing too. Boeing is right down the street and they would always come in after midnight since we were the only place open that late at that time. Me and the drive-thru guy, the other cook, and the front counter guy decide to just pray that the manager came back. Boeing 3rd shift lunch rush hits and we get killed and run out of patties. I walk into the freezer to get some more and find the original closer balls deep in the closing manager ontop of an open case of frozen burger patties. I started laughing and was asked by the assistant not to tell the store manager. 3 days later at my new home store, I find out that we were getting a new morning manager and it turns out to be the girl I caught in the freezer at the other store. I said nothing to anyone about what I had seen. I come in for my normal 3 pm to 4 am closing shiftaround 1:30 so I could get an early start on inventory paperwork and I can't find this girl. I walk into the manager's office and there she is with a frozen corndog, pants around one of her ankles and both feet on the desk. This time I said something to my boss. The last one was a loaner manager was sent to my store because the store manager was having surgery on his inner ear due to a nasty fall on the ice that ruptured his eardrum. I'm closing and the loaner is the mid shift. I had been arguing with this idiot about everything he was doing wrong. Our safe in the office was never locked during buisness hours since the only 2 managers that knew the combo were the GM and the Morning manager. This idiot counted his money and made his deposit for his shift. I double checked his numbers and he was off by a couple hundred. We got into it about that in the office. He knocks me down, grabs the bank bag and stuffs in in the back of his pants. Then he has the balls to take my car and store keys and lock them in the safe. this jackass shoves me again on his way out the dor. I call the corporate office and tell the owner what happened. He tells me that he will come by and open the safe when he leaves the office. The owner never showed. I had to stay at that store until the opening manager came in at 6:15 the next morning. She cracks the safe and I go home, only to answer the phone from the office telling me the idiot loaner manager never deposited any money the night before and I need to go back to the store and recount his deposit when he gets to the store. Idiot loaner comes in with the bank bag and it's still short. I get accused by the idiot of faking the paperwork and stealing the money. The owner takes his side until I show him the paper trail that proved that my first audit was after he made the deposit. Owner tells the idiot to replace the missing money within 24 hours or he would get fired and prosecuted. I then get asked to cover the idiots midshift which I agree to do and then work my normal shift. after being in that store from 3:00 the day before until 6:30 that morning and then coming back at 8:45 and staying until 4 am the following morning I take the next day off with the owners approval. I get a phone call at 4:15 that afternoon from my district manager telling me I am no longer an assistant manager because of a no call no show and that I am being transferred to the only 24 hour store along with a pay cut to minimum wage and 15 hours a week. I ended up quitting a week later after the owner tells me there is nothing he can do. Man I hate Spangles...ooops!

Once, we had been alerted that there was a disturbance in the ladies room. We went to check it out and found that a teenage couple was having sex in the stall! We detained them and called the High School across the street where one of my co-workers was also employed. The next day, my co-worker had to sit down with the teens, their parents and the school admins to discuss what happened.
We had another similar incident, only in the changing rooms...

Why do people constantly ask about the magical 'Back'? Especially these days when a decently smart person can walk over to any one of the scanners placed rather abundantly throughout most stores and check to see if the items are in stock themselves? Checking a price is not the only reason they put them there...

Well freakin' played...
Worked retail for 5 holiday seasons.. Did everything we could to help customers, but I feel ya about the one unruly one that was always referring to the mythical 'back'. It is not a pocket of magical holding. We had a trash can, a back break area with 35 years of employee graffitti. You would, and will, always get the hold-out that absolutely insists something is in your backroom. One of my buddies once told me the best solution. Say, sure, I'll go check again, never know... Go to the backroom. Drink a soda. Relax. Wait 5 minutes, come out, and give your best "boy, checked everywhere... just not in. can take your name & number and give you a call when it is in?" A total win. You have earned the customers respect. And gotten a free soda. yeah. Me and a few of the young cashiers moved them around to make a kind of big maze once. Played tag, climbed on 12-foot tall stacks of boxes, just a great time. See, these are the good memories of that place ^_^
