That being said if I have to drink a light beer, make mine Yuengling Light Lager. On the other hand, if you're specifically counting calories, a Guinness is only 125; most of those light beers are about 99, so there ain't a whole lot of difference. That being said, I DO think twice about reaching for a Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA, and even if I have one, it's only one. The calorie count on that delicious, delicious beer is 450 per 12 oz.

Sam Adams is ALWAYS my Beer of choice, though lately I have been on a serious IPA kick. Sierra Nevada Torpedo, Avery's, Dogfish Head, Mojo, Meantime and several others I forget the name to.
Loving the bitter clean taste of a good IPA.

I love that Berryweiss, actually...I didn't think I would, bought it for the wife. Wound up drinking most of the first 6 before she even got home. Purely a summer beer, though, just like their Shandy.

Just sampled my homebrewed Porter...so amazing that I chased down this thread...
Served cold this beer is complex and exciting, it has unlike most beers an excellent aroma, quite inviting, it has hints of molasses, chocolate, vanilla, and fruits. I sampled it last night with a fourteen ounce porterhouse, asparagus, and potatoes au gratin...it helped enhance the flavor and cleanse the palate between bites...really dark and exciting...not so much a beer as a being with a life of its own. It has an excellent finish, the aftertaste is pleasant to say the least and you're left feeling warm and tingly afterwards, right in the bit of your stomach. I have a feeling that this beer could be enjoyed with chocolate or a rich maduro cigar...I have some Camacho triple maduros that I'll have to sample with it. Before I sampled it I allowed my father to take a few bottles with him to the local Beerfest where it was highly praised second to Nelson's Revenge a very good ale (personally I think most people aren't used to darker/heavier beers so the Ale was going to win out by default) however a Porter earning praise from mainstream beer drinkers is a feat in and of itself...next time I plan on putting on two five gallon batches and aging them in mini-kegs for a year. |

I tracked down my old thread becasue I came to an epiphany regarding beer the other night.
Think about this, beer is about 5000yrs old, which is about 4900yrs older than modern refrigeration. So, why is it that we think we need to have beer ice cold? Does it really make it taste better? Well, the other day I had a sore throat, and cold anything makes my throat close when I'm really sick, but I really wanted a Sam Adams, so I grabbed one from a box on the floor, poured a glass, and suddenly noticed a lot of subtleties in the flavor I never noticed before! It was... better?! I think maybe we're conditioned to want our beer cold because... A. Certain cold beers are more refreshing than anything in the known universe on a hot day. B. Being extra cold can numb the taste buds to how shitty a cheap beer (Bud, Miller, etc...) really is, fooling your mouth. But I think maybe certain porters and ales are a lot better at room temp, especially the really heavy ones (ever have a Sam Adams Holday Porter? It's so black if you hold a glass of it up to a light you can't see the light through it). You just notice a lot more of the spices and flavors used. Anybody else have this revalation? |

I'm with ya Zef, I love the dark beers.
I'm also with you in terms of the flavors being more accessible at room temperature. But the thing is, I really hate warm beer. If I want complexity and flavor at romo temperature, I'll drink scotch. Beer must be cold.
