I tracked down my old thread becasue I came to an epiphany regarding beer the other night.
Think about this, beer is about 5000yrs old, which is about 4900yrs older than modern refrigeration. So, why is it that we think we need to have beer ice cold? Does it really make it taste better? Well, the other day I had a sore throat, and cold anything makes my throat close when I'm really sick, but I really wanted a Sam Adams, so I grabbed one from a box on the floor, poured a glass, and suddenly noticed a lot of subtleties in the flavor I never noticed before! It was... better?! I think maybe we're conditioned to want our beer cold because... A. Certain cold beers are more refreshing than anything in the known universe on a hot day. B. Being extra cold can numb the taste buds to how shitty a cheap beer (Bud, Miller, etc...) really is, fooling your mouth. But I think maybe certain porters and ales are a lot better at room temp, especially the really heavy ones (ever have a Sam Adams Holday Porter? It's so black if you hold a glass of it up to a light you can't see the light through it). You just notice a lot more of the spices and flavors used. Anybody else have this revalation? The best brew pubs all still carry 'cask' ales, where the beer is not ice cold and is hand-pumped, rather than run through the pressurized tap. That is always my favorite way to drink beer.

I don't really care what beer I drink, as long as I'm n the mood to get farked up I'll drink it. I know what I DON'T like though, I HATE Corona beer, that shit tastes like vomit, no fooling. I thought Tecate was tasty, and that's saying something because I think most beer tastes like crap.
In case you can't tell by now, I hang around with hispanics a lot, lol. Sometimes I get bored and go buy weird-sounding beers at Bevmo or whatever. Blackberry Sam Adams...doesn't taste like blackberries, lol. There's the faint aftertaste of berries after you take a swig, which is awesome, but I could just buy some way cheaper beer and a box of berries and have he same effect! I was hoping it would be like drinking "grown-up kool-aid", hey I like berries!, but I guess that's what wine-coolers are for, har har. |

Sad Adams is brewed with generous amounts of win. Up here in New England we have Shipyard, brewed out of Portland ME. Its similar to Sams in a way but more bitter IMO. Every Halloween they put out Pumpkinhead Ale and my buddy is obsessed with it. Beer flavored with a pumpkin aftertaste. It was an interesting novelty when I first tried it years ago, but another friend of mine had an uncle who worked at Shipyard, got him some cases, and we lived off that for a cpl months. Ill never drink it again!!!
Yuengling is pretty good too. They dont carry that here, but my ex would visit family down south and bring it back. Drank a ton of it on vacation last year in SC. |

I have unfortunately become a beer snob. I am spoiled because this place.
99 BOTTLES - Specialty Beer Store is about 2 miles from my front door. Right now my favorite beer is probably Kulmbacher Eisbock, I try to follow a simple rule for my beer though.... If you can see through it, it probably isn't worth drinking. But I will try just about everything, hell at a tasting the other day I had Fat Tire... FROM A CAN!! |
