Truly, its "those who can, teach. those who can't, do." I've had to negotiate with kids from stabbing other students, staff, and even myself. It feels like a different reality altogether, much like living in a third world country. We've even had a parent come with a gun and the faculty had to disarm the individual.
I never even missed a day last year. I'm also doing the second master's full-time on top of the teaching. I honestly came in with a very open-mind, even a liberal point of view despite being a moderate conservative. I'll leave with a bitter taste in my mouth. I go to work everyday because I do make good money and I literally take care of my parents who are older. So basically, I just put my head down and keep going forward. I'm going to seek other opportunities when I have enough savings to keep the family afloat and have enough for a rainy day. Someone mentioned that all great societies go on a great decline. I wonder if that's true with the United States. I just wonder what the heck is wrong with people. Oh well, never take life too seriously, you'll never get out a live.

I was trying to help you.
What would the world be like if we all quit when the going got tough compared to what it would be like if we all succesfuly tackeled adversity.
I suppose the world needs people to make strong willed people look strong by comparison.
I did read that you didn't even line up another job before you left right?

I spent the past two years as a public school teacher and I identify with everything everyone has posted about the hardships of the job. Funding for the school district where I worked got cut and my job was eliminated. Even if that hadn't happened I don't think I could have made it for more than a couple of more years. I have horrory stories to tell too, but I'll keep those for another time.
dukeisawesome I don't believe that you realize that sometimes some problems can't be fixed with a can-do attitude. If you have a fender bender and you get a big dent in your front bumper can you fix it in your driveway at home with a hammer and a pair of pliars? No matter how much you may want to fix it, you will have to take it to someone with the right tools to fix it.
The same can be said for the current climate in education. Teachers don't have the correct tools to make the change necessary to effectively address the problems. And that isn't the teachers fault when you're talking about issues such as lack of parent involvement, state mandated testing, state-mandated curriculum, refusal of administration to effectively discipline, lack of adminstrative support, tardiness/truancy, general lack of funding, disrespectful mean-spirited students that refuse to behave, increase of duties responsibilities that require even more time, etc etc...
Believe me when I say that every teacher in america would change these things if they could, but they can't and that is why people are walking away. Really it's a bit like being in a relationship with an abusive or uncaring partner. You can have the best attitude in the world about it, but that doesn't mean that the other person is going to care for you or stop hitting you. So you either stay and take the abuse or you realize that you're better on your own and leave and rest well at night knowing that you're not going to be treated like crap anymore.

Sounds to me you should see about getting your job back.
First, I know it's hard...I did it myself...I taught adults that didnt want to be there in the first place. But it seems you would do more good to the students (and parents) that do appreciate what you do. I'm not saying you gave up on the kids...but it seems the few were better off with you...and now they are without.
Sacrifice is not something that anyone can just ask of you. It sounds to me that it was worth it for some. Only you can say if that sacrifice for the few was justification enough. I am not sure that the opportunity to influence and guide young souls down a path is something that one just does or is meant for...but if you are meant for that purpose, you should get your job back.

I'm sorry things worked out this way. I'm not a teacher but someone I love dearly is, going through school and realizing what a huge gap there is for male teachers was hard on him. I can completely understand your choice to resign but remember, that the popsitive imapacts you make on students are stronger than you'll ever know, even if its only one student.

I had a job I hated, and when my wife got pregnant I quit with nothing lined up, and that challenge helped me grow, attack what I really wanted, and I was able to land the job I wanted in the field I wanted. that's adversity and facing a challenge, not simply sticking with a job you hate, which made me weak, miserable and stagnant.

Teachers like you are few and far between. I completely understand why you resigned, but it is really sad when someone like yourself has no support system. Good luck to you in the future, maybe someday you will return to teaching under better circumstances. there are students out there that need teachers like you.

It isn't much of my or our business, but you put it out there so I am sure you are looking for something. I can only see that words of encouragement while nice, would fall short. Words of discouragement are mean and pointless. Kids now adays, for the most part suck. I have two and my daughter is 14 and though I love her, I would never wish her on any one else. Sometimes we have to make hard choices and we have to make devastating changes. I truly beleive that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I beleive that we are missing part of the story here, but if you had wanted to share you would have. I truly enjoyed the "Great Gatsby" and "The Scarlett Letter" but I am odd and truly enjoyed reading and using my brain.
If I may suggest and if you can still bear to teach or are allowed to I would strongly suggest private or charter schools. I would also strongly suggest looking at adult education I.E. a corporate trainer or college educator. Also if I may, I would strongly suggest going back to school while the job market sucks and getting your masters or doctorate. My five cents. Good luck.
