I agree with that except when your talking about Manning. He's an extra coach on the field. Manning is one of the best if not best ever when it comes to smarts, gameplanning and most important.. execution.

Two weeks is too much time. More time to nitpick plays and performances. More time to worry that you're not going to play your best. More time to ponder the upcoming game. The coaches come up with a gameplan and have all this extra time to look at it and pick it apart.
It's not aways a good thing to have that extra time. The same thing as giving Manning time to study a defense can be said about Brees and Sean Payton, and the defense to study Manning and his plays. Remember, Manning is all about timing and they really dont' run to many different plays. They don't move WRs around like other teams do. Wayne always lines up the same way. Give a D two weeks to prepare for what is basically the same thing that's been done for 18 games all season... I think I'd give the extra time off advantage to the Saints D. |

True! The advantage goes too Manning. You don't need to run gimic plays and all these wild formations, when you execute. That's the difference in every game ever played. Can you u execute the plays? The NFL is all about making plays and nobody is better at it then Manning. I'm expecting him to have a incredible game and will win the MVP.

at this point in his career Manning has seen it all, there is nothing he is going to find in film study in two weeks that he won't in a week, and he certainly doesn't need an extra week to put it to memory. |

And the extra week gives the Saints D more time to come up with ways of stopping Manning. The Colts run the same plays, they don't do trick or surprise plays. Another week of studying film gives the Saints D the advantage because it's more time for them to watch Manning and get his timing down.
With Manning, timing is everything. The Patriots used to beat them all the time because they would disrupt the timing between Manning and his receivers. Remember, the whole "no bumping WRs after 5 yards" was put into the rulebook because of the way the Patriots were playing the Colts who then complained and whined (sorry, but it is true). And bring up the tuck rule all you want, the rule wasn't added because of the Pats, it was already there to begin with. The extra week really doesn't help the Colts D because the Saints run alot of trick and exotic plays, stuff that can't prepare ahead of time for. Mannings typical MO is the take it easy the first half, hope the D keeps the points down, and during the first half he gets a feel for the opposing D and what they're doing. Then he makes adjustments during half time and comes out and picks the team apart.

actually, wasn't it in the rule book but not enforced? the Pats won three Super Bowls by mugging and holding receivers that should have been penalties. any coincidence they haven't won since that rule was enforced. complaining that a team is getting away with breaking the rules isn't the same as whining.

I don't think so. you were never allowed to chuck a receiver within 5 yards. here is an article I found from 94 when the owners agreed to enforce it, which apparently then got ignored again during the Pats run.
A rule worth chucking: the NFL owners touched a nerve when they decided the no-chuck rule would be strictly enforced | Sporting News, The | Find Articles at BNET and here is a chronology of NFL rules, with the latest mention of the 5 yard rule being enforced in 96. it definitely wasn't a new rule. http://www.steelersfever.com/nfl_history_of_rules.html Last edited by gunslingercbr; 02-04-2010 at 02:32 PM.. |

It was a rule before that.
Steelers Fever - History of NFL Rules Quote:
1978
The NFL continued a trend toward opening up the game. Rules changes permitted a defender to maintain contact with a receiver within five yards of the line of scrimmage, but restricted contact beyond that point. 1996 The five-yard contact rule will be enforced more stringently.
