Before working for the Aust govt, I used to manage record shops, met ALOT of cool people; Jeff Buckley, KISS, Frenzal Rhomb, ACDC, Ry Cooder, Red Ryder, Brian Addams, U2 ,etc.
I also help out one day a week at my Local Comic Shop, so I've been able to meet a bunch of famous comic types and media people. Spent alot of time chatting to people like Dirk Benedict, Ernie Hudson (real nice guy), most of the Buffy, Angel, Stargate, Farscape cast. The nicest actor I've met was John Schneider from Dukes of Hazzard and Smallville. The most painful was Summer Glau. She was nice to me but really rude and distant to the fans who paid to see her and get autographs..strange.
By far the nicest though was Jennifer Love Hewitt, when she released her last album, I got to see her perform a 60 min set before some company big wigs and media. She was very very good live, she can really sing.
After, almost everyone was more interested in schmoozing so I got to chat to her for almost 2hrs and she was so sweet and down to earth.

I've worked clubs in Seattle for years, so I could do a huge list of casual meetings with famous music types. I won't even get into my last name and it's history here. But for non musician types, I can claim Joe Pesci, John whatsisname from Northern Exposure, Penn Gillette, and a few "difficult to get words in" hours in with Mr. Penn.
Oh, and being a fisherman's kid from Kodiak AK, I've been on a few of the boats on Deadliest Catch. Any of which is more impressive than the above.

Ive met Dez Fafara of DevilDriver fame twice...once at a show off their first album, they were signing autographs out side, second they were second band on the bill, left after they played, and he was walking out a side door on my way back to my truck. Said 'WTF IS UP DEZ?!?!??' and he waved and said hi and I kept going. I honestly dont think I could chat it up with a famous person so I didnt bug him.
I also walked past Mandy Patinkin and his kids in a hotel in North Conway. Yknow, Inigo Montoya? This was a while ago, fresh off his ER/Chicago Hope whatever stint. Just gave him a lil chin nod and he grinned at me =D

I don't know anyone famous personally, but I have run across a number of famous people during my run in retail.
I used to work at a place called Capitol 6 Theaters in Vancouver in the early 2000's. The theater is closed now, but it used to be one of two major theaters in the downtown core, hence the stars going through to watch movies:
Jessica Alba - She used to come in all the time for matinee's, sometimes with her boyfriend at the time of doing Dark Angel which was filmed in Vancouver. She was always dressed down, but she's so freaking gorgeous it's hard not to notice her.
Terence Stamp - This guy came in for a matinee. What a prick. He came up to me and demanded that the sound in the theater be turned down. When I told him I couldn't, he said, "Tell your manager, that Terence Stamp, the actor wants the sound turned down." So I called my boss on the radio and he actually laughed. Mr. Stamp was not pleased.
One of the dudes form the Backstreet Boys. Howie I think.
John Schneider, who played Bo from the Dukes of Hazard. I got to serve him popcorn. At the time, that was the highlight of my life. Sad I know, but I was a huge Dukes of Hazard fan as a kid.
Robin Williams - He was incogneto in a giant beard. He looked pissed off so I didn't say anything to him.
Leland Orser - guy from Seven who was forced to kill the hooker. He's married to Jeanne Tripplehorn. He came in with Jeanne for a matinee for Pearl Harbor. I had just seen that shitty movie the other day so I knew he was in it. When I took his ticket, I said jokingly, "You're buying a ticket to see yourself?" He glared at me and said, "What did you say?!" Before I could apologize, Jeanne said, "Oh, he's taking me. I haven't seen it yet." They went on and he just gave me the dirtiest look. Guy can't take a joke. Jeanne, however, was dropdead gorgeous in real life. Way prettier than on screen.
Tom Cavanagh from the TV show ED - He came in really late with his buddy and wanted to order food after we had cleaned most of the machines. I was annoyed, cause I wanted to go home, but gave him his stuff anyway, and he tipped me for it. He seemed really apologetic. Decent guy.
P.J. Prinsloo - I worked with him at the theater when he used to be on "Edgemont." It was this local teen soap opera like Degrassi. I remember he used to practice his lines and read scripts between movies behind the consessions stand. He's not really famous, but he's had small roles in Disturbing Behavior and Battlestar Galactica. Very cool guy, and really the only sorta famous person I know on a personal basis.
Tegan. Or Sara. I dunno. One of the girls from Tegan and Sara. They're twins, so I can't remember which is the one I hit on, but whatever. They're both lesbians so it stands to reason I had no luck, haha.
I also used to work at a now defunct local electronics store and we used to get the cast from Smallville in all the time.
Tom Welling - I never got to help him but I saw him once. He bought a TV from us and we delivered it on the wrong day. Then he bought a camcorder, and there was nothing inside once he got it home. Needless to say he never did business with us again. Probably a big reason why the chain when bankrupt last year, haha.
Kristin Kreuk - nice girl, helped her at the checkout once or twice.
John Glover - Kind of a wierdo. He went behind the counter to try on headphones. He was there with his assistant or manager or whoever. Kind of odd.
The drummer form the band Lillix - They're a local band here in Canada and a friend of mine's sister does PR for them. Anyway, the drummer came in and I asked her questions about the band and she was like, "I'm just the hired drummer." So I hit on her. No luck though. :(
I also ran into Joshua Jackson when I was working at Blockbuster. This was back when he was on Dawson's Creek. I remember saying, "Hey! You're Pacey from that show!" And he's like, "Yes I am!" with a huge grin.
At the same Blockbuster, I also helped Ryan Reynolds. Guy was not in a good mood and looked like shit so I kept all sarcastic comments to myself that time. At the time he was on that 2 guys and a girl show. Who knew he'd go on to be involved in the raping of Deadpool in Wolverine Origins?
Aplogies for the essay. I think there's more, but I can't remember right now.

There is a big tennis tournament going on here where I live in Mason OH that Serena and Venus Williams are playing in. I fix windows for a living (the glass kind, not the computer kind) and I had to fix one yesterday at the Hyatt here in Mason. I was in the lobby waiting for a clerk to sign my paperwork and I saw Serena. I guess I really didn't meet her, I just smiled and said hi, but I think that counts. I guess before that I had only seen pictures and video of her on the tennis court with no make up or anything. Yesterday she had her hair fixed, makeup, and a little short black dress on. She was looking damn good, and with the legs on that girl she could probably just squeeze one out of you.
I love Joes. They are delicious.

My uncle has a telescope named after him in Chile, a proud testament to my family's lineage of scientific, occult Mayans.
I'm not even joking.
All a scientist needs to abandon his or her country is a whiff of the super-cool science happening behind enemy lines.
