The way I look at it is this: There is 2 types of people. First type is the "bandwagon" fan. The fan who likes anything that involves there favorite brand whether it's GI JOE, X-MEN, HULK, TMNT, SUPERMAN etc. These are the people who will defend every piece of shit that is ever put out. These are the people who buy every toy line, buys every shitting movie based video game because it has Wolverine on the cover and these are the people who just settle for whatever they make because they feel it's better than nothing.
The 2nd type is a "hardcore" fan. These type of fans love the original work of there favorite brand. These are the people who would rather re-read 20 year old comics rather than read newer "more hip" and "more up to date material". These are the people who enjoy what first got them to love there brand. These people also accept updates and revisions of there brand when there brand has been treated with respect and remained loyal to the original material. These people tend to be more realistic in what is good and what isn't. A simplier way to classify it would be to use a sports analogy. You have your "hardcore" fans who will follow there team year in and year out. They don't care if there team is 4-12 and stink the place up. They will go down with the ship and still love and respect there team. They know that one day they will return to glory and it will be AWESOME! Then you have your "bandwagon" fans who just go from superbowl winning team to playoff contenders to just whatever is popular at the time. Unfortunally for me, there is way more "bandwagon" fans then "hardcore" fans. Everyone is about making money. They don't care if there following the canon that made the series great. They don't care if a black guy is playing a white guy. They don't care that CC and Baroness aren't suppose to be related. They don't care that SS is suppose to have integrity. They know that all they have to do is get a few things right in the movie, put the brand name on it and millions of idiots will flock to it and buy crappy video games, average toys, silly merchandise and settle for the age old comment of: "at least they made something with (insert brand) involved. It's better than nothing! |

imo yes. In the overall opinion no. It's been proven over and over that catering to hardcore fans, doesn't bring in as big a payday. every now and then though we get a great inbetween like the current batman movies.

Your grouping is black and white, it doesn't allow for shades of gray.
You classify people as either hardcore or bandwagon (which isn't the right term for what you're describing, a better term would be "followers", people who follow the brand and don't care about what it is). A "bandwagon" fan would be someone that jumps onboard when a property gets hot and then just forgets it when it's no longer popular and jumps onto the next hot property. What you, and most of the hardcore fans (only singling you out because of the post where you lump everyone as hardcore or bandwagon, no offense meant) don't realize or don't accept or don't care (or I don't know, but you get where I'm going) is that there is a viable middle ground. And that's where the majority of the people are falling. We don't like something just because it says G.I. Joe on it. We like it because it fits what we think G.I. Joe is, we like the designs, we like the story, etc.. Hardcore is white, Follow is black, and Middlers. A Middler is someone that likes the overall brand, has particular favorites of that brand's versions and is open to new interpretations. The majority of the "RoC Lovers" are Middlers. I just don't understand why most hardcore fans can't seem to accept the Middler crowd.

And so on and so on... That's the "problem" with being hardcore. Which vision is the "right" one?

A G.I. Joe bandwagon fan would be someone that watches the movie, gets the toys, comes on here saying what a big fan they are, but as soon as the next property comes around, forgets all about Joe until the next movie and then comes back and says "remember me and what a huge fan I am"
Thank god there's not that many of them.

ARAH of course. Was there ever a 12" comic? Did the 12" figures have actual bios before ARAH? Was there a 12" cartoon series? Sigma six isn't even in the same league with ARAH and shouldn't even be mentioned. IMO of course.

But there is a problem, it has to be change that you think is okay and fits your definition of "respect to the canon". A Middler feels the same way, but is more open to the idea that there can be a version of the property that is fairly removed from their favorite, a new canon so to speak, and it can still be part of the overall property.
