Got a question for you guys. Couple of days ago someone asked on another forum I am on what figures in a line they should get. I responded with a slightly annoyed response of "Why ask this? If you want to collect it and think it is cool just get it. If your buying what someone else says you should you are in it for the wrong reasons." Well he didnt like my answer and responded with some words my 10 year old doesnt know so I think I pushed his button along with some of the other users who didnt like my response. Honestly, I think in said forum some of these guys just like talking about stuff because it makes them feel important. Anyways, I just think if you have to ask what you should get then maybe your in for the wrong reasons and should move on. Thoughts?

Normally when I buy anything (no matter the cost or item) I will do research, and ask someone if about it. I think that some people are wired that way. Of course something sometimes catches my eye and I will buy it with no research, but normally I do a lot of research before buying stuff, or starting a collection.
And as for what I research about said item, it is generally everything about it. From the costs, to the enjoyment it gives other people, and to find potential flaws that may denture me. I can get what you are saying about people asking to seem important, but I think that more people are just used to asking, and looking into things before they take the jump and buy them. |

I'll go one further: If your posts on a toy forum mostly center around judging others by what they collect, you're also probably in the wrong hobby. This is not sports, there's no "performance" here (that's not at you, by the way. Just seems appropriate). |

I will ask about a good price, etc. Just collecting too me to is collecting what I like, had as a kid, my favorite characters, etc. If I don't know what something is I wont get it. It always just strikes me funny and sometimes it seems like people wake up,need a hobby, and so they are like "Hey Ill collect GI JOE!" Then start asking questions about it. I don't know maybe I am thinking about it the wrong way but too me you just collect what you are into. It seems like some ask what is a cool character, bad character, etc. Too me if your into the line and want to collect you would already know these things. If your not then you may get tired of it really fast and move onto coins.

The 25th trooper. Saw pics online, and while I've always been an o-ring guy, I decided one day that maybe the new Joes were alright. Bought a few on the cheap, they showed up, and I hated them. If I'd have asked here, someone undoubtedly would have said "no way man, buy the 30th and later troopers" and saved me the mistake. Then factor in characters that have had 50+ releases since the originals came out and some advice is definitely helpful. For the record, I only haven't collected Joes for maybe 5 years of my life since I was introduced back in 85 or 6. It's not a matter of waking up and deciding to collect, but a matter of waking up and considering collecting something new. Where better to get "reviews" than from fellow collectors? |

You’re 100% right. You should collect what you like. As you get deeper into the hobby, like any hobby, you’ll find yourself on the cutting edge and get in on crowdfunding projects like the first wave of Mythic Legions or BFS. But if you wait to see what the masses will place value on first, well you’re not only a poser but you’ll always be behind the curve, like trying to time market dips. My method is collect stuff from my childhood, but if something new looks cool I’ll buy that too. This guy sounds dis ingenious and you pulled his card publicly. Sounds like he got defensive because you sniffed him out. I wouldn’t engage him any further. You won with your initial post. Drop that mic and exit stage left. Well done.

I think your intuition is right. Sounds to me like he was asking, without asking, what would be valuable to collect. The guy sounds like a prospector, looking to make money off of a hobby he knows nothing about. It’s like asking, “what’s the next Amazon stock?”
You’re 100% right. You should collect what you like. As you get deeper into the hobby, like any hobby, you’ll find yourself on the cutting edge and get in on crowdfunding projects like the first wave of Mythic Legions or BFS. You did nothing wrong Shadow. Most people are just band wagon “collectors” or in it for profit. Asking what to collect is a red flag for a bottom feeder if you ask me. (Call Someone’s bottom feeder bullshit on eBay and watch those guys squirm) I’ve collected Joes since the 80s, never needed another mans opinion on what I like. With my nerd group of buddies, I’m the only one who collects Joes. They like what they like as do I. Copestedic. I think you pulled his card, the soy kicked into overdrive and the little brat got into his feelings about it. Truth hurts

But with that said from what I interpreted from this: "what figures in a line they should get" the guy seems to just be asking an honest question. Sounds to me like he wants to know the versions, or characters that are good. Seems a bit lazy of him to just flat out ask who are the best characters, instead of actually watching/reading the stuff, but still he just sounds like he simply researching the stuff. Or he sounds like a scalper looking to get into a new hobby to make money. In that case screw him. |
