Miami-Dade is the county. The city is simply "Miami." (I'm assuming you're referring to South Florida.)

Dade County.
I know in construction, because that area gets so many hurricanes, that there are special codes for the construction and design of buildings in Dade County. Manufacturers of products (roofing, metal studs, exterior finishes, etc..) have special requirements for installation in Dade County.

Its the same in Nashville (Nashville-Davidson), Chicago (Chicago-Clark) and other cities, the city has grown so large as to take up the whole county so they refer to it now as City/County.
Its funny that Dallas and LA cannot do this, as they stretch outside of 1 county into 2 counties. Fun bit of trivia! Thanks for stretching the mind this morning. |

Some places also hyphenate the city and county to reflect a consolidated municipal government. Rather than having a county and city government, some of these places only have one that governs the whole county area. A number of counties in georgia were trying to consolidate a few years back when the State mandated that cities and counties come up with a plan to deal with overlapping services. If you ever want to see an ugly political battle, just try sitting in on negotiations where the city police chief tells the Sheriff that the City if going to take over all patrol and investigative functions and the sheriff will just go back to being the "county jailkeeper".

One that threw me for a loop was Kansas City, out there they use abbreviations like KCK or KCMO (Kansas City, Kansas & Kansas City, Missouri)
