I'm relatively new here and I've been mesmerized by the giant collections that some of you guys/gals have amassed. I thought I was being silly with my pile of boxed up Joe's from child hood. I move a lot and never really have a chance to set up the whole shebang. I've sold stuff, then decided to sell everything, then changed my mind, now purchasing more (Ugh- can't make up my mind)...Maybe the next place I move I'll start to display. Wife is on board so no issues with that.
Anyway, the question here is HOW? How much are you all spending? Do you even keep track? (or are you afraid to?) I've been on a small spree for a few weeks tying to source a few odds and ends and I feel a little guilty about spending a few hundred bucks. But then I see these collections... Seems like folks here are dropping hundreds per week, if not thousands! Also, since I'm an OG o-ring guy, I am not sure how to tell the difference between 25th and modern(?) figures. How do you keep all of this straight? I'm not that old and I usually remember most of the names but there's a lot of merchandise out there. Any tips?

How do you keep all of this straight? I'm not that old and I usually remember most of the names but there's a lot of merchandise out there. Any tips? First, a lot of us have been at it for years. Personally, I've been back in since 2000 when the o-rings were re-released. Hell, the only years of my life that I DIDN'T have Joes since i was introduced in 85 or 86 was '93-2000. As far as spending, if you'd have seen my collection at it's height, you'd have said "wow, that must of cost a fortune", and you'd sort of be right, but it was spread over many years, and while prices were FAR lower at that. Typically, for larger or more expensive purchases, like the Terror Drome, I'd plan for it and save for a bit. I'm also largely an O-ring guy, though coming here has changed my opinion of the ME Joes. there are some really nice figures. I also struggled at first to see the difference between 25th and the later ME, but i think this side by side of the classic Viper sums it up. There's a slight difference in scale, and a HUGE difference in mold quality- the 25th are pretty rudimentary by comparison. The articulation also seems to be more refined in the later Joes, but I'm still new to that, myself. On selling, I've recently dumped almost all of my Joes by necessity, and plan to rebuild again asap. I've had to do this before, but I will say that I've never seen the prices so high, so hopefully at some point they level back out. You picked a tough time to jump back in. Just remember that they aren't going anywhere, and you have all the time in the world to add to your hoard!

I started collecting when I was in elementary school back in 2009 and haven’t stopped, so I was able to get my modern figures at the retail prices of around $7-10. If I were to start collecting right now, I’d probably have to pay 4 times the amount I did. I guess it just comes down to being at the right place at the right time. Also, if you’re just getting back into collecting I’d suggest waiting to see what’s announced at ToyFair next month.
As for 25th vs Modern, 25th have a rather soft sculpting style and are directly based off of the 80s Joes, whereas Modern has crisp sculpting and are either Movie based or “modernized” versions of the 80s characters. The picture Sataninjaku posted has a 25th Viper on the left and a modern Viper on the right. Happy hunting and Yo Joe!!! |

I see the difference. I have a fondness for the originals because they take me back to a simpler time. But that ME one on the left is super detailed! Is this era taller? I keep seeing some of these called 4" while the old ones are 3.75". Not sure if I'm understanding correctly?
I really dig the detailed versions. Maybe better for diorama display. Any ones in particular that are more desirable? I never really paid attention to the toy line since the late 80's when I started driving and moved on to hot rods and girls! LOL Now, I've got several big "toys" and the girl so I need to get back to the Joes... haha Wife is a fan as well so it's a fun deal for both of us and a little cheaper than cars.

How do you keep all of this straight? I'm not that old and I usually remember most of the names but there's a lot of merchandise out there. Any tips? As Sataninjaku said right now prices are at an all time high - you may have some luck in the vintage market prices falling some once the new Snake Eyes movie is released and if anything comes from the Evergreen Toyline - but alot of folks seem to think that the current prices will be in place for the foreseeable future. If you are mostly on ebay I would recommend not using the "Buy It Now" option and being able to control your impulses. I paid alot of for things because I just had to have them - it's instant gratification for sure but it comes at a price. Keep a look out on auctions which is what I do now. I personally love receiving a lot of figured/vehicles - it brings back that nostalgic feeling of going through and sorting my figures as a kid or checking out a friend's collection of joes. Your own preferences as a collector will also play a role - if you want near mint, complete figures and vehicles it will be more costly. 3D-Joes and Yojoe.com are two good references for vintage and 25th/Modern figures if you want to educate yourself more or get a refresher. |

As far as desirability, using Ebay as a guide, most of the stuff that came after 25th and the first movie line seems to sell at a price point close to the originals, which blows my mind. It's ALL in demand right now. You're quite lucky the SO is on board, that's a real rarity. I've never married, but GFs over the years have ranged from "why?", "no!", and "it's weird, but okay". Though I did date one that was definitely more upset than I was at having to sell to cover bills once, and another that stole my favorite Joe during a break up to spite me.

Yes, I'm lucky. When I first dug out my old Star Wars and Joes, she was amazed. In a good way. We geek out on similar things. She's no collector but she likes to help me find cool stuff, restore, repair, etc. She and her siblings had joe's when she was a kid so there's still a bit of the nostalgia. She really likes the diorama's. We'd like to do them but have ZERO artistic ability. LOL
Sadly, like a fool, I sold off the bulk of my huge comic book collection and all of my Star Wars to fund car projects. Parted out a few bits of the Joe's but have kept the bulk of them.

Sorry for the poor quality pics Also, another note is that the Me guys joints work a lot better than the 25th, and the 25th figures can be rather brittle at time and sometimes break at the elbow. Granted, these aren't full dios, more like diorama elements, and I still have a ton to learn. Wish I still had pics of my massive display.

Yojoe.com is my regular go-to with regards to figures and accessories. If you click on the Collection tab listed under my sig it'll give you an idea on how I organize my Joes and Cobras. I've spent more than a few thousand buying almost 2000 figures so I don't even think about going back to calculate the exact cost. Add that to my Transformers collection and it's quite a decent chunk of change.
