Curious if anyone has any good recommendations in regards to fantasy or science fiction novels or series'. I trend towards military themes in either genre; evidenced by my love of Joe.
I love George R.R. Martin's "Song of Fire and Ice Series" and almost anything Glen Cook has written (the Black Company series being my holy grail). Really enjoyed Joe Aborcrombie's recent series, "The First Law". Also R. Scott Bakker's "Prince of Nothing Series" is excellent. That should give you a taste of what I like. What am I missing? Any suggestions? As an aside, how great would it be if there was Joe fiction similar to the Star Wars universe of novels? Crap or not, I'd read them all. Thanks in advance for any replies. Always appreciate good fiction recommendations! |

James Clavell's "Shogun" - Pirates, Samurai, Ninja, action, comedy, love - This book has EVERYTHING!
Guy Gavriel Kay's "Tigana" - a LOTR-like epic all nicely wrapped up in one volume. Spider Robinson's "Callahan Chronicals" - Sci Fi mixed with comedy that is topped only by Douglas Adams. |

As a fellow fan of Cook, Martin, and Abercrombie, I can heartily recommend Scott Lynch's "Gentlemen Bastards" series; two books so far, "The Lies of Locke Lamora" and "Red Seas Under Red Skies."
Abercrombie has another book coming out very soon, not part of the First Law series but set in the same world. Also, if you haven't read ALL of Glen Cook (who, for my money, is the greatest living fantasist...I say he edges out Martin, if only just) give the Garret, P.I. series a try. Or, his stand-alone sci-fi novel, "The Dragon Never Sleeps" is, imo, a neglected masterpiece.

Thanks Foolproof and Irid70, will check out your suggestions.
Irid70, agree with you entirely in regards to The Dragon Never Sleeps (and your comments on Cook in general)...read that a couple months ago and agree 100%. I've been slowly devouring Cook's work...ironically I was just about to move on to Garret, P.I. so glad to see a recommendation to that effect. |

I'm an advocate for Robert Jordan's wheel of time series (thought a few people think they dropped in quality after book 6 or so.)
Moorcock's Elric series is good. Obviously If you havent read Orson scott card's Ender books, read those. Robert E Howard's Solomon Kane stories are kind of like a puritan punisher, also he some other important charecter, I believe his name started with a C.... like GRRM's series kim Stanly Robinson's MArs TRiology has been opten for a T.V. show, which you will probally want to read before the show air. Scalzi's Old MAn's War series is also a great Sci fi series (kind of like starship troopers with out the fascism) |

Robert Heinlein!! Pretty much anything, but Starship Troopers and Stranger in a Strange Land should be required reading, as well as Time Enough for Love.
Neil Gaiman is great as well. American Gods, enough said. Michael Crichton is a fun author, his books are always better than the movies they are made into. I particularly like Jurassic Park, Congo, and Prey. I disliked Next. Orson Scott Card is wonderful. Read atleast Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow, but there are many more beyond those. But seriously, Stranger in a Strange Land. Favorite. Book. Ever. |

A few of my favorites:
(There are two series of books dealing with characters from the book "Ender's Game", commonly called the Ender series and the Shadow series. The Shadow one is the more military of the two and deals with global events) (Ender Series) Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card Speaker for the Dead Xenocide Children of the Mind (Shadow Series) Ender's Shadow (This takes place around the same time as Ender's Game but from a different character's perspective) Shadow of the Hegemon Shadow Puppets Shadow of the Giant I like all of both series of books Battletech Legend of the Jade Phoenix Trilogy by Robert Thurston Star Trek TNG/X-Men Planet X by Michael Jan Friedman Magic the Gathering Odyssey Cycle (books 1-3) The odd thing about this set of books is that the first two take place at the same time but from different character's perspectives and the third one is a continuation from the first two, but they're all written by different people Magic the Gathering Onslaught Cycle (books 1-3) by J. Robert King (These are all written by the same person and contain many characters from the previous three books I mentioned) Resident Evil series (books 0-6) by S.D. Perry These are based on the games with a few books being bridges between the games (IE: book 1 is the first game, book 2 is all new, book 3 is the second game) |

Just found out a show I've been watching call "Legend of the Seeker" on Sundays at 6pm is based of a series of novels call Sword of Truth
The Sword of Truth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Legend of the Seeker The show is surprisingly good so the novels might be worth a shot.
