I have a spreadsheet I use to calculate shipping and I have both the regular retail rate and the eBay/PayPal rate loaded in. You get a worthwhile savings for both First Class and Priority (including flat rate boxes and envelopes). Sometimes the savings are less than a dollar, sometimes they're $10 or more. Most of the time it's at least $1 that you save.
If you have a scale and a printer you are absolutely better off printing the postage at home. As another hidden bonus, eBay/PayPal shipping allows you to ship packages up to 16oz under First Class, whereas the USPS cuts you off at anything over 13oz.

Well, I've planning a purge and selling shit off again...all this makes me think I'll just offer free shipping and overcharge for the item itself. I don't have the time nor the inclination to dick around with postage.

I've never tried that. I assumed something was wrong with Ebay's calculator. Not sure I would want to risk it.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like I've been paying way too much for shipping. I keep putting off buying a printer (work in an office, don't really need a home printer). But with as many sales as I have, the printer would pay for itself in a couple months. Thanks Zap.

Zap, I bought a printer (finally, long over due), and am now printing my own shipping labels. I'm trilled at the money it is saving me, while also feeling like an idiot for not printing my own labels sooner.
Unfortunately, eBay's new(sort of new) policy making all fixed priced listings "good until sold", caused me to go over my free listing allotment for the month, and now I'm going to get hit with 5 listing insertion fees. First time in the 4 years I've been selling that I'll be hit with insertion fees. Bravo eBay, you win this round. |

The "good 'til cancelled" eBay change was, I think, designed to try to steer people back toward listing items with auctions. If not that, then I can't see what result they were after that could benefit them. The only actual effect it had on me is that I now ignore all of the eBay offers for free additional fixed-price listings (for exactly the reason you've discovered). I've been known to have 90+ active BIN listings at one time but that won't be happening anymore since that can wind up costing me $0.35 (I think that's the fee) per additional listing per month. I'll just sell at a slower papace rather than paying for listings.

Not yet, but it was only like $45, and I've already saved about $10 in just the first two weeks of use.
