I only saw it once, but it was too much to quickly. I tried pointing out the cars to my daughter, and I only got as far as the vacation station wagon.

Haha True, but it used to be adults who dicked about with things from their childhoods was a small subset. Large numbers of Americans beholden to their past got started with boomers nostalgic for anything from the 50's and 60's, but before that, people were much too busy just trying to earn enough money to feed their families. The past was shit you just got done with. Now, we all seem so enamored with the past that I think it's inhibiting growth, creativity and common sense. We're bored and we talk about how shitty things are now, but no one is doing much to change that. We're all bored because we've all become boring.

Not to mention that cars today all look the exact same and are boring as hell unless they cost over $100,000.

It's cute & well done in a generic, we've-seen-this-shit-before, sort of way. It just happened to align with something I've been thinking about for awhile concerning an overall creative malaise in this nation. We've become steadily more and more reactive and seem to have lost a lot of the proactivity that used to define America. For example, there was a time when this nation would've seized the opportunities alternative energy present. From just a business standpoint, there's a shit-ton of money to be made and jobs to be created there, but we've chosen to look to the past instead. There are other reasons for that too, of course, but the overall American mindset appears to be very backward-looking these days.
Commercials are often nice snapshots of the psyche of our culture and this one in particular says volumes. No one has a better handle on what interests Americans than advertisers. I know, it's just a commercial, but it's not an isolated incident. It's another bit of nostalgia-based salesmanship. Think about the sort of ads predominant when we were kids and going back to the 70s, 60s and 50s. It was mostly all futuristic and forward-looking. |
