I always figured it was because a Beetle wasn’t Michael Bay enough. VW trying to distance themselves from war is pretty funny, considering the origins of the “Race Wagon”...

It’s product placement. Michael Bay directed commercials for GM and had a relationship with them. GM gave them a new Chevy Camaro for each film, and all of the Autobots are GM products. They even invent whole new characters at random (like Jolt) just because GM wanted their new car to be in the movies.

The Transformers toys were after my time and I don't think I ever saw the cartoon. I did see two of the movies and thought they were lousy. This movie looks like it could be fun though.

The guy who directed this did the movie KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS, which was pretty great. Like the trailer. Has a cool vibe. Non-shredded-metal transformers helps.

I do love me some F-4 Phantoms but not as any Seekers. If the film is in 1987 the F-15 would be available and the F-4 would be terribly outdated no? As far as Volkswagen- I can’t speak to the past but Takara was able to make their MP Bumbelbee an officially liscenced VW Bug. It’s a nice draw to have the official liscence on the box with accurate year/model colors etc. And I’m not even a car guy. But here is where it gets weird...... Gear heads and Transformers fans pleas correct me if I get this wrong. It’s Porsche who is steering clear of “War”toys. This seems to be why we have no officially listened Porsche versions for MP Jazz or Clifjumper. Though there was talk of a back door legality with Takara aquiring Tomy- or was that a different car liscence? Anyway now I’ve read that Volkswagen owns Porsche ( don’t believe this was always the case but again I’m not a car guy) but VW is allowing Porsche to maintain it’s sovereignty with regards own liscencing. So we get an accurate VW Bumble Bee but not Porsches. Again correct me if I’m wrong.

I’m not sure about how much autonomy the marketing division has, but Porsche has always been a subsidiary of VW... (my parents had both a VW Rabbit and a 941 during the 80s, and I can tell you a 941 was like 80% VW parts, right down to the door locks)
Still ridiculous, considering how many Panzers and other WWII military vehicles Ferdinand Porsche had his hand in the design of....
