Some days ago, I was terrified to realize that the plastic of some of my figures started to deteriorate. These were not GI Joe figures but older Disney lines (Mulan, Cinderella), the newer lines of Lanard Corps and some figures of unknown production. The older Lanard Corps figures made of rigid plastic are not impacted, but only newer ones made of a more elastic material. The signs of that deterioration were these: When touching them it feels as if someone had put and then ripped of a sellotape like Tesa. All these figures had in common that they were on a shelf for several years, although not exposed to direct sunshine. As a reaction I boxed most of the figures so far shown on the shelf. I wonder whether someone had similar experiences. Does anyone knows whether that deterioration stops when the figures are in a dark box? One further information possibly important: São Paulo, where I live, is located in the north of the subtropical zone, very near to the tropical zone. That means that sunshine here is much brighter and stronger that e.g. in Germany of in the northern states of the US.

Just a part of toy collecting, I have several ten to 12 year old Star Wars figures that are sticky gummies or have yellowed and have been in ideal temps and light settings. Newer toys just are not made to last as long as the 40 to 50 year old plastic toys that are just really now beginning to break down.
You can think companies using cheaper materials to increase profits. |

They are toys made for kids to play with, so they aren't made to last a lifetime. I think humidity over time also may play a part in the stickiness.

I had some Japanese anime figures in storage in a bin for a decade and the paint on several of them became tacky and one became slimey. This was in a fairly dry environment, too. So most likely as others noted, things are just not built to last anymore, unfortunately. I do hope my Joes last a long time though!

Some plastics are more prone then others. I picked up a bunch of Nerfuls that were tacky. Someone recommend that I clean that with Windex and it did help slightly.

Sunlight, humidity and heat all cause major wear and warping to plastics. Not everyone lives in a dark desert ideal for storing figures. Even your normal everyday weather might destroy your toys depending on where you live.
Heck, when living in a different part of California, I had issues when I was in the Central valley. I didn't have trouble with tacky paint or slime etc, but the sunlight BLEACHED THE FIGURES on display. |
