SI.com - The Fortunate 50
Topped by 2 Golfers but predominantly Basketball and Baseball players (the 2 sports with guranteed contracts). Some of these are just sick. #22 didn't play a single minute of gametime and still made 20+ million? That's ridiculous. I know all the names of the players, but some of these guys aren't even the best players on their teams or even that good anymore. Damn guranteed contracts. And the endorsement deals? Holy crap... I thought the economy was bad? I do like the mentions of how much some of these guys donate and LOVE the fact that #50, Lance Berkman's, contract states that he has to donate 100,000 annually to a charity of the team's choice. That's a nice clause.

Well the Mannings are cool and each has led their team to a Super Bowl Win but most of the guys on the list are total assclowns.

It's the basketball guys that always get me. Most of 'em aren't worth that kind of money anymore (not that an athlete ever is but...), it's just because of guranteed contracts.

I think "guaranteed money" is ridiculous. Don't you think they would try harder and be more competitive if they were payed by how they played day to day.
You missed all of your free throws and gave a lackluster performance, here is your check for $100.

C.C. Sabathia makes $675,000 a game when he starts regardless of how well he plays.
Steve Francis, #22, made 20 million AND DIDN'T PLAY A MINUTE!! What the hell is up with that?

Yeah, and as a Rockets fan, it pains me to read that not only did he make all that money, he wasn't even the highest paid on the team! Between Franchise and T-Mac, that's allotta money that wasn't on the court. Damn.

The guys with guaranteed contracts happen to be a part of strong unions; ALL MLB and NBA contracts are guaranteed.
The NFL, on the other hand, doesn't have guaranteed contracts b/c the NFL player's union is a chump for the owners. Now, yes, athletes make amounts of money that feel obscene. But imagine you are Average Joe NFL Player, making the $300,000 minimum, or whatever it is. That seems like an awful lot of money. Then you break your leg in Week 2, the team cuts you, and now you are making no money for the rest of the year until you can find something else. Good luck with that broken leg. Moreover, especially in the NFL, the average career is SO short, these guys have to make as much money as they can as quickly as they can. If a guy plays in the NFL for 7-8 years, he has probably made a couple of million dollars. He is 29 years old, and that money is not going to go very far over the course of the next 40 years.

I have no problem with these guys making alot of money, it's the obscene amounts that I have a problem with. That Francis guy shouldn't be able to make 20 mil not playing. The thing I like about the NFL contracts is there's alot of incentives: playing time, stats, etc.. Baseball and Basketball should be the same. A relatively moderate (for the sport) base salary and then incentives to make the large amounts of money.

As for the list, we shouldn't complain too much. We pay them that money in a roundabout way. If you want to make a difference, stop buying memorabilia, gear and taking the fam to the games. I do agree tho that it is extremely sad that some guys are absolutely terrible but are making 10 mil plus. Kelvin Cato anyone? Terrible. They need to do away with guaranteed contracts.
