For the most part, the owners earned their money thru working. Some are inherited but some worked from the ground up and made smart investments (which these athletes should be doing instead of buying 8 million dollar homes, because eventually they're career will be over and they won't be making the same money).
Troy... Paul Allen (Microsoft) was worth $20 Billion in 2004. He owned the Portland Trailblazers and Seattle Supersonics. A $20 million contract for one year is only 0.1% of his net worth!!! (NOT 1%... 0.1%!!!) Quote:
Salary isn't a guranteed contract, not even close. If you don't perform you can get fired and let go. There's also work furloughs when the economy is bad (I'm salary and just went thru this). Guranteed contract means that even if the person doesn't perform, ticket sales are done, or whatever, he'll still get the same amount of money.
I also have to perform to get my "contract". If I don't do my job, I won't have a job. Get an injury and sit out some time (a season), you get some disability but it's at a reduced rate of pay and it will dry up at some point. This topic seems to have lit your emotional fuse? Are you satisfied with your current income and lifestyle? Last edited by Mr. Focus; 07-01-2009 at 04:41 PM.. |

The entire system is screwed up, from the owners to the players and their agents.
All I'm saying is that the guranteed contracts should have performance based clauses. If you miss a season you only get 1/2 the contract. Don't put up the same stats you did before (within reason of course), there's a deduct on the contract. There's nothing wrong with that, make 'em earn it. LeBron, Kobe, Peyton, Tom Brady they earn their money on the field/court. It's the guys that get the big money and then sit on their asses that I have a problem with. You know the owners are in for the money right? So if they have a guy that generates lets say $500 mil a year in revenue thru merchandise and advertising he deserves a piece of that...even if he isnt performing as well...if he sells that many jerseys, posters, cards, toys and what not he will have a high salary. Alot of those owners dont give two shits about winning as long as the money rolls in..
