I want to take better pictures of my dios. Nothing too extreme, I researched the editing software and green screens on Amazon but it does seem like a lot of trouble and money. I also noticed that there is some free photo editing software online. I would like to add desert, city, jungle, water, sky and space backgrounds to make my photos look a little better. Do you guys have any recommendations.

I wish...I've tried a few free programs so far all garbage.
At this point I've come to find that simply finding a nice well lit non-descript backround is what I like best. This is simply my front stairs. Nothing fancy...no real environment like your looking for but it looks good and all I really need to do is take my pic and crop it. Or this...a plain white wall... I can easily edit this in MS Paint or on my cell alone. But if you find a free program that works well I would love to know. But the funny thing is sometimes not having the good stuff makes you have to make use of what you do have. I've managed some great stuff in MS Paint...it may take some time but with effort it can be done. |

I believe they call this the "George Lucas Paradox."

There is no need for a green screen. Just take a well-lit photo against a clean background. White does the job just fine. I usually use the 'Fuzzy Select Tool' and fiddle with the 'Threshold' setting to automatically follow the constrasting contours of the figure. If there are problems with that (like glare or something) I switch to 'Free Select Tool' and do it by hand. If your photo layer doesn't already do transparency, select 'Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel.' The other problem I run into is that I the selection process sometimes leaves 'jaggies' or doesn't precisely conform to the edge (where the photo resolution naturally makes it blurry). I solve this by creating my selection and then clicking 'Select > Grow' and increasing the size of the selection by one or two pixels. Then you can either use a 30% eraser or a Blur tool to soften the edges and avoid the jagged appearance. The other thing I do is I fiddle with the colors. You have to experiment a LOT with the 'Color' tools like 'Curves' and 'Hue-Saturation' to really get the most out of the software. I often cheat and touch up the colors on the figure to emphasize the detail. I also reduce the saturation on the backdrop just a little bit, so that the figure stands out more. You can PM me if you have any questions. Anyway, I use GIMP to make stuff like this: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...pprentice.html http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...der-woman.html http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ck-n-roll.html http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...pecialist.html |
