i think things tend to be pretty cyclical. so the collective society is no longer dreaming of the flying car like they/we were in years past. the current cycle is the development of computer technology as a means to allow people to post blurry pictures of themselves in a 'sexy pose' or update everyone on how their conversation with 'Robby the dreamboat' went. i find this current trend to be aggravating, annoying and counterproductive to the evolution of the species. but i remain hopeful that the flying car, space colonies and all the other grand visions of the 'future of the past' will again be a priority.

Were you born in the 50s? I was born in 1979 and NEVER imagined we'd have flying cars. Hell, I'd never have imagined iPods, eBay, youtube, or freeones dot com-NSFW!!!(all excellent bits of technology). Look at all of the medical advances we've made, look at consumer technology. I'm happy where we are. I'm not ready for Skynet to take over.

you know what really pisses me off about this picture? because when we were kids we were told that by now we would totally have the freaking hover skateboards.
Damnit. I feel like i have been horrendously lied to and I am gonna be sick. same with a Jaws advertisement that comes off of the billboard and tries to eat me.

Wow, So I guess you missed Blade Runner, BTTF, and countless other 80's sci-fi that clearly envisioned a future with Personal Civilian Aviation Transports...And Skynet is a joke, A.I. With such capabilities are at least 200 to 500yrs in the years in future...To think a Machine Intelligence with a Vendetta against humanity makes for good sci-fi, but in reality it's pretty ludicrous, except for Human error or Malevolence involved, and even then EXTREMELY Complex to create "Actual Machine Consciousness"...practically IMPOSSIBLE with Current or Near Future Technology.
there have been news stories popping up a lot lately about AI computers and how they are about 1-2 generations away from having fully automated computers that could actually perform similar to skynet. There have been a couple of ethics commitees who have met to discuss whether or not it should be done. The scariest part of all of it was a report I read about an efficiency computer that suggest it remove the worker from the equation and replace him with a computer.

I think my biggest let down in our current "future" from when I was a kid is the lack of advancement in Space Travel and Exploration.
I thought 2000 Space Odessy and 2010 The year we make contact to not be THAT far fetched in what we could accomplish by that time.. but BOY was I WRONG!!! It seems like Humans just don't give a crap about the rest of the Universe they seem completely content to destroy their world before they worry about finding another one. But truthfully as much as we don't have many of the things we thought we would, IE robots... I think humanity has probably still advanced further than it is ready. Seems like the more tech crap we get our hands on the less human we become. Dunno.. its a dilemma.

theres a book called wheres my jetpack... it goes right along with this thread. and really i like where we are now... sure, i wish teleportation was a reality but other than that, i'm content. some of the things, like colonizing other planets, always seemed to be something done of necessity (i.e. we trashed earth, lets move on to mars) and i'm glad we never got to that point.

We have achieved some very impressive advances in medicine. There are pills available that enable an elderly man to achieve and maintain a raging four hour erection. Even George Jetson didn't have those.

I wouldn't be too sure about that.

We traded flying cars and a dome on the moon for the ability to download porn at lightning speed. IMO... it was a good trade.

I'm disappointed we don't have Virtual Reality Video Game systems like they said we would 15 years ago. PS3 and XBOX360 are cool but they are just basically PS2 and XBOX with better graphics. Same gameplay. I want the total immersion like the Star Trek Holodeck. Imagine the gameplay on that!
