On August 24th, 1989, Pete Rose, one of the most statistically successful Major League Baseball players ever, accepted placement on Major League Baseball's ineligible list in exchange for MLB not issuing any formal findings regarding his "betting on Major League Baseball games in connection with which he had a duty to perform." If you're not familiar with the details, or just want a good summary, check out these links :
Pete Rose - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://baseball1.com/bb-data/rose/agreement.html And so, since it's the 20th anniversary of Rose's ban, I think that now's a good time to really consider whether or not Rose has been punished enough for what he did, and whether or not he should be reinstated and made eligible for Hall of Fame voting. Personally - I don't think that he should ever be reinstated. Nobody can argue that, despite some unsportsmanlike behavior at times (his injuring of Ray Fosse during the 1970 All-Star Game probably being the most infamous), his career wasn't phenomenal. But - even though there's no question that he bet on baseball while playing and managing, he adamantly denied it for fifteen years, and only came clean in 2004 for financial gain, to promote his My Life Behind Bars autobiography and Hustle, the ESPN television movie about his life. Those aren't, as far as I'm concerned, the actions of a truly repentant man. Furthermore, we don't know if Rose bet against the Cincinnati Reds while playing for/managing the team - but he may very well have. "I bet on my team every night. I didn't bet on my team four nights a week. I was wrong. I bet on my team to win every night because I love my team, I believe in my team," Rose said in 2007. But John Dowd, one of the special investigators who investigated Rose's gambling for MLB, said that Rose didn't bet on the Reds when Mario Soto or Bill Gullickson, Reds pitchers who had "ERAs substantially poorer than others in the National League during 1987," pitched. Sources: Rose admits to betting on Reds 'every night' - MLB - ESPN Pete Rose - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ESPN.com: MLB - Dowd: Rose 'probably' bet against Reds while manager Dowd has no reason to lie - whereas Rose has every reason to. If it's ever proven that Rose bet against the Reds while managing the team, it'll be a cold day in hell before the possibility that he might ever be reinstated is even halfway seriously discussed ever again. Finally, I don't think that Rose should be reinstated because his ban has set a very clear message to those associated with Major League Baseball that gambling on baseball will absolutely, under no circumstances, ever be tolerated, and will be dealt with harshly and finally. Anyway - what do you think? Should Rose be reinstated? Last edited by Jonathan; 08-25-2009 at 11:40 AM.. Reason: spelling |

I would rather see Rose get Tombstoned by Kane than get reinstated.

I don't care. Baseball has been ruined forever by the steroid era. The one thing that has been holy in baseball for over 100 years is the stats and records. In the last 15 years the thousands of cheaters have pissed on that. I have written off baseball as a sport.

I think Pete should get his place in the HOF...as others on here have already said, there are other sports figures who have done far worse and committed more atrocious crimes and they didn't get banned. I'm not saying that just because other people have done worse that means what Pete Rose did was okay. I'm just saying his ban has been 20yrs and he's "served his time" so to speak.
Let the man have his place in the Hall

You know, precious few players have contributed as much to Baseball as Charlie Hustle. A player who, imho, should be the model to follow for work ethic and attitude for ALL young players. A true hero of the sport and role model to be followed.
That said, he should also be the model for what NOT to do. I love Pete Rose and think that his time on the field requires a large place in the hall for his accolades, but when you break the rules, you pay the price. Is the punishment steep? You bet it is, but in a sport full of premadonnas who think their shit don't stink, this is or should be the path that is clearly marked for those who may try to go down this path. I think he has certainly been punished long enough and should be forgiven, but that does not mean he should be allowed into the hall. Such action come with a ban from baseball. What good are our rules or our credibility if we fall back on our word? If the MLB allows Rose back into baseball, all they're saying is that you can do whatever you like because given enough time, you'll get your day in the sun. Not the message you want to send. It boils down to this. If you make a rule and set up a punishment ofr said rule, then you have to stick with it or otherwise your rules will be meaningless and your punishments only as good as the paper they're written on. I love you Pete, I do, but you made a midstake that came with a terrible price. Perhaps you should have thought of your integrity instead of your wallet.
