Yep. That's something I never understood. Sports fans will happily wear a jersey, paint their faces, get drunk and scream at the top of their lungs, and generally behave like animals; and yet if I express a restrained appreciation for toys, comics, or 'Star Trek,' that makes me some kind of subhuman. Ummm... Yeah. I'm the one with the problem. Okay.
I recall spending every single weekend playing with GI Joes with my friends. Then I moved, and when I arrived in my new school the local kids were too cool for toys. And I was like, "Why? When did that decision get made? Nobody gave me that memo." But that feeling of inadequacy persisted for many, many years. I thought that these things were 'bad' and that I wasn't 'supposed' to like toys or comics. Eventually I started having depressive episodes and every few months I would punish myself by throwing away my things. (Toys, comics, video games... One time I even destroyed a brand-new PS2.) I kept thinking that if I got rid of these things then I would be a "real adult" and people would like me. Fast forward fifteen years, and I don't care anymore. I've spent more time than I would have liked in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, and those are years I will never get back. I'm now a CW3. You know what being a warrant officer is like? Ask anyone in the Army and they'll tell you: Chief does whatever the **** Chief wants. I'm at the point in my life where I don't have to *prove* anything, to anyone, for any reason. And if buying toys makes me happy, who are you to tell me I'm wrong? I love the Seahawks but I have not nor will I ever utter, "we won this weekend." Lol I hate that, too. I'm like sweet let me see your pay check so I can see Jerry Jones' signature.
In Texas , I can't stand the "we" associated with the University of Texas, when 90% of the "we" have never even set foot on the campus or even any sort of college campus. And society has determined that kids are done with toys, it is not a false narrative. For 20,000 years we have been told at a certain age you are no longer a kid. Society and human culture have made that decision, 80 years ago, kids had to go to war and little sblings had to step up. 150 years ago kids had to run the farms. Even today those apply, look at the Middle East kids have to go to war. My kids think it is normal and every dad has a butt load of toys, comic and football cards. They think everyone's dad does that. My son already ask for shelves for when he gets a house so he can display his collection. Yes I did "grow out of it" in high school and college but I always checked the toy aisle and never quit comics. |
