You need to go back a few pages, either that or in another thread but I genuinely friggin' cringed when I saw him appear in the first movie. And then the fact he was the only autobot that died.
I brought it up here, but I got the usual defense that he was just a robot and I'm reading too much into it, as if allagory has never been used in the whole history of sci-fi before. >_< Watto had an Italian accent, the Viceroy had an Asian accent, and what about Jar Jar, Ebonics? I think it was a way that the witters wanted to convey some type of culture in a race of aliens, just like the issue of transformers. In this way, characters are not seen as just a white or black face... This can also be said about the new Star Trek film. Did anyone notice the Black Romulan on the platform fight scene? I think having different cultures or races in a aliens race is fine and should be conveyed. But I do not agree about the GI Joe movie having Wayans portray Ripcord. Ripcord was an established toy figure and the story why they did not cast him as "Stalker" because of the name is just STUPID. They should of made an new character for him to play and make a new figure, or there are other plenty of GI Joe African American characters to play, like Alpine, Doc, Roadblock, (the infamous)Colonel Courage...the list goes on. |

That's the thing, though. If someone has to ask why people would have a problem with this, then it's unfortunate enough. I don't blame a white guy for not understanding, that's just a 400yr gap in culture that the media doesn't exactly help with at work.
The fact Michael Bay had a whole army of crewmembers and producers and Steven Friggin' Spielberg there to tell him why they might be taken as offensive caricatures, and that people will argue and defend the use of this modern minstalism, is what makes me and my friends nuts. Minstalism was used for centuries to depict black folks as ignorent, silly, and bumbling fools (on a good day!). It's one of the ugliest parts in the whole history of western civilization the stink of which hasn't rubbed off yet, and now seeing a sci-fi movie that's supposed to be a fun, escapist entertainment romp tainted with the stink of this kind of Uncle Tomfoolery in this day and age is unacceptable. Don't ask why you should feel offended, but at least ask why other people are offended. This speaks to another problem I have with modern action and sci-fi films. There never seems to be anybody on board to be the voice of reason and know when to reign things in a little bit. The Star Wars prequels suffer from this as well. What they needed was someone to step in at certain points and kind of say "Yeah, that Jar Jar character, he's offensive. And stupid. And pointless. He has more screen time than Obi Wan Kenobi in the Phantom Menace. Lose him." But no one says this. Gary Kurtz did it on Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back, and it got him fired. Transformers 2 feels like it was made by a bunch of 14-year-olds. One adult could have made a world of difference. |

Transformers 2. Total f***all of an ADD seizure, plot vomit, visually incomprehensible mess of a movie. Mike Bay needs to be beaten to death with his coke mirror.
That aside, I agree with lister. It strikes me nobody was in a position to "speak truth to power" on this thing. The twins had more screen time and dialouge than all the other Autobots, or at least had more focus. And really they shouldn't have been in the movie at all. So sad, the first 15 minutes looked so promising...

Though done in bad taste,I was not offended or shocked at all by the way the twin we're characterized. Honestly Im so use to seeing such non sence,it doesnt affect me anymore. I personally give non blacks more credit then that,I would hope people would know that not all black people act like that the same way not all white people act in a certain stereotypical manner and not all asians act in a certain manner etc etc. That is why I feel everyone has a personal responsibility to not feed or fall into any stereotype, dont be a Diddy or a Snoop,be a Oprah or a Obama, eventually negetive imagery will become positive.

I enjoyed it. The twins made me chuckle; I didn't find them any more offensive than the gangsta wannabe chavs that live round the corner from my house.

Frankly, I don't understand how anyone could NOT think those twins were racist. I don't want to get the thread shut down, so that's all I'll say. Oh, and that Zefram is 100% correct.
Transformers 2 feels like it was made by a bunch of 14-year-olds. One adult could have made a world of difference. I watch Michael Bay movies for three things: cool cars, hot chicks, and things going boom real loud-like. I love all kinds of movies, and most of the movies I love are serious, dramatic and socially relevant films, but sometimes I just want to be taken out of the real world and watch stuff I don't get to see every day. However, I will say Michael Bay has made some films that are insensitive to certain groups of people for sure. Still, I don't think it is ever his intent to be malicious about it. I also admit that the film was full of 12 year-old humor, but then, my mind basically regresses to that age whenever I buy a new Joe, so whatever. Sometimes it's good to just be a kid. |

Aw man, if Soundwave is hardly in it, I think I'll just wait for some YouTube clips to pop up or something.
I also wish they kept him as the boombox and not changed him just because younger kids wouldn't "get" the boombox since it's old (which is the apparent reasoning for them changing him). Ugh.
