For me, bread-filling-bread means it's a type of sandwich.
Here's a photo of a sausage sandwich, surely a hotdog is just a variation on this. |

The Hot Dog origin story I have heard states that the bun was added mainly as a way to hold the wiener/sausage being sold, as they were being sold on the street and at baseball games. Is a gyro a sandwich? A taco? a breakfast burrito? All similar in composition to a sandwich, but not really sandwiches. Maybe your "anti-sandwich hot dog" students just aren't as good at stating their case. Meat and bread together doesn't necessarily constitute a sandwich. I doubt most of you "hot dog is a sandwich" people would say a corndog is a sandwich.
BTW, a hamburger IS a sandwich. If I recall the history of sandwiches correctly, wasn't the idea that the bread made it easier to hold on to the meat/fillings, so you could eat without utensils? Sound similar to your post about hot dogs. I would absolutely say that a corn dog is a specific type of hot dog, and then whatever category we put hot dogs into, corn dogs must also go. (A corn dog is a hot dog, so if a hot dog is a sandwich, then a corn dog is a sandwich.) To settle this we really need to focus on what defines a sandwich. It's pretty hard to come up with a definition that includes all accepted types of sandwiches, but excludes hot dogs.

Using leven or unleven bread constitutes a sandwich, so gyro and breakfast burrito are types of sandwiches. Tacos are great because they throw a shell in the mix. personally a taco using a hard shell is it's own classification, but if its a soft wrap used then its a sandwich. Corn dogs are not hot dogs. Hot dogs are a weiner and a bun, corn dogs are a weiner dipped in corn meal, deep fried and served on a stick, not a sandwich. Pizza, hot pockets, pizza pops, calzones would be under the classification of pies. Bottom crust, sometimes top crust and baked.

I've always considered the wiener to be the hotdog, but the bun makes it a sandwich. So a corndog is a deep fried hotdog, but its still not a hotdog sandwich.
Like how a hamburger steak is essentially just a hamburger with none of the parts that make it a sandwich. |

I think sandwiches with specific names cannot be considered sandwiches. A hot dog is a hot dog bun and a wiener. A burger is a burger bun with a burger. If you ask for a burger bun with a wiener in it, it's a wiener sandwich in a burger bun. Hot Dogs and Burgers are not contained in the Sandwich collective set, they have their own special sets in the same level of hierarchy. As such, a Big Mac is a burger, but a McFish is a sandwich.

Hotdogs ARE sandwiches. Subs are sandwiches, burgers are sandwiches, sloppy joes are sandwiches. The only reason they have names is because there are so many different sandwiches.
If PB&J were served in a split roll or a bun, it'd still be a sandwich. You naysayers need to look up the definition and step into reality. Anything inside bread is a sandwich. If I poured milk on a slice of bread, and folded the bread over, it'd be a sandwich. An awful sandwich, but a sandwich. I don't know why, but I'm invested in this argument. |

I think the hot dog needs to want to be a sandwich before it can be a sandwich....
