Not trying to sell my collection just curious.....
I've been reading a lot of posts over the past few months about Tankers selling off their collection due to financial problems (which I understand 100% and support) or other issues. Since I started collecting roughly ten years ago I've amassed a massive amount of figures, vehicles, playsets and misc crap. I love it all to a certain degree and would never really consider parting with it unless I had to. However, there are times when I take stock in my collection and become completely overwhelmed with what I got. Every time I say I'm going to cut back or I'm going to thin some stuff out I actually, for whatever reason, do the opposite. I'm a sucker for scouring the BST pages looking for a bargain. My wife, for the most part, tolerates my obsession but I know in my heart (however hard it is to admit) I've reached my limit as to what I can keep. I have some stuff on display, which I rotate every now and then, but most (as in 90%) of my collection is in storage. I know I really should start to let some stuff go but as all of you know it's not an easy task. It's all special to me in one way or another. If it wasn't, I wouldn't have it in the first place right? So here is the question I present: Part of the reason my wife tolerates my collection is because she knows that there is some sort of value to it (plus it makes me happy... blah, blah, blah) She thinks if the day ever comes that I have to sell my collection we're gonna strike it rich like Jed Clampett. Black gold..Texas tea I let her believe that sometimes (usually after I purchase something over budget) but I know it's a fickle market. Sometimes you win...most times you lose. I know it's a long shot that I would ever recover what I put into my collection if I had to sell. That's part of the reason I don't even consider doing it. Just the thought of listing it all and packing it all up is enough to give me nightmares. But..... Let's say somebody walks into your life and wants to buy your collection whole. Nothing broke down...100% complete as is. Whatever price you have in your head that you think it's worth is matched. Would you let it go? If you let it go would you regret it and start over again or would you run down a grassy hill, wind blowing in your hair, yelling at the top of your lungs "I'm free...I'm free" (I think you all know what I mean by that) Just curious....plus it's Friday and I want something interesting to read. Enjoy

Personally, I wouldn't put a price on my collection but if I was ever offered something substantial, I would have to succumb to my greed.
At this point, I wouldn't take less than $5K for my collection.

I suppose there is a price for which I would part with my collection. Right now I estimate that at about 2x the value of my collection. I enjoy just the aesthetic value of looking at my mostly MOC/MIB collection.
I think that if I would ever stop and, absent the joy of making the find/purchasing something, take stock of what I have spent to acquire this collection, I may be more inclined to part with some of it due to feelings of guilt over what seems just wasteful spending on my part.

I think the only way I'd ever get this collecting ball and chain off my ankle is if I got what I wanted for everything. I could walk away happy with no regrets after that. I know that ain't gonna happen so I'm hooked until then.

It was a huge undertaking for me to let my 88-90 25th stuff go, but I have too much of the 82-87 stuff and I like some troop builders and vehicles, so I had no room for it and had to let it go. I also am into the 82-87 MOTUC stuff now and between the two, something had to give or just leave it in storage. I am more partial to the cartoon years stuff. However, for about $5000, I'd let my current stash go, and it is worth far less than that.

i started collecting again about 8 months ago and got in over my head with stuff on ebay. this has led to some harsh words and hurt feelings between my girlfriend and me.
ordinarily she is very tolerant and understanding of my hobbies, even willing to try some herself, but because i wasnt responsible with my purchasing she has it in for my joes. i understand where she's coming from and have cut back (almost) completely on buying. now we're trying to buy a house together and i need to come up with my half of the down payment. honestly if someone were to make an offer for my collection as a whole i'd take it and see it as a blessing. it would be hard to give up my joes but even harder to give up Julie. |
