You guys seem to be forgetting that you can actually RENT a HOUSE as well.
This is what my family and I have done as often as possible, sometimes it was a Duplex most of the time a house.
While Renting a house does not give you the equity or tax breaks etc.. You get the benefits of if something breaks the Landlord fixes it.
The only thing you have to do depending on your lease is keep the yard cut, take care of the pests, and other small stuff.
If anything big happens the Landlord will fix it or pay you to fix it usually by knocking it off the rent.
When you rent a house you don't have to worry about property taxes or insurance.
The downside is if something happens to the house and you don't have renters insurance you lose all your stuff.
But you do get the peace of mind of having your own space. I can't stand hearing people all around me like in an apartment especially people upstairs.
Right now in my area you can rent a house for no more than it would cost to rent an apartment.
Would I like to buy a house instead, sure.... but life ain't perfect yet.
A Gem of That Size Answers ALL my questions.

Apartments- I hate them. My parents and I moved into an apartment after they both lost their jobs. It sucked. The neighbors sucked, the kids misbehaved, we had to pay for our own laundry. They did frequent inspections on our pets.
The residents of the place were creeps as well. Many of them seemed to be up to criminal activities most of the time. One guy we used to live next to frequently beat his girlfriend. They kicked him out within a month. I remember going outside and seeing the cops everywhere. It was a sobering time to say the least.
Mobile homes- Several of my Mom's family live throughout the US in Mobile home parks. Chances are when we went to go see Uncle Ralph, we would be staying in their mobile home. It feels like living in a world of particle board. Its claustrophobic and horrible. However, most of them are located in the countryside. So thats a plus.
Houses- I love houses. I live in one right now. I can do whatever I want I can blast heavy metal/punk all day and no one can tell me what to do. However, I prefer track houses versus what we live in now. I like having a big backyard and being able to garden.

I take your "Huh?" and raise you a "Are you crazy?"
Very few people move back into their childhood homes, or remain in them through their adult years (ie not moving out) unless they have distinct financial problems. In which they are not on the same scale as the standard population, who are self-sufficient and live on their own. I never said they CAN'T be handed down - but very few people want (or have the means to support) a second home.
Now, the question was which is better - apartments or homes. Your example is that your grandmother passed away and you made a profit from her home. There couldn't be anything LESS appealing in my mind than having to stifle my spending and struggle to make due on bills and what not, only to die, and have someone else benefit from a lifetime of payments to a bank.
So sure, to YOU houses might be great. But that's because you benefitted from someone else's hard work.
Houses aren't worth the expenditure and late-term pay-off. Get a really bad ass apartment, and go to Disney every year instead of worrying about a morgatage. You're only alive for 60 or 80 years, friends. ; )
G.I. Joe fans are the kind of people who demand a steak dinner but will only pay for macaroni and cheese.

Damn straight I want to be able to leave my kids and grandkids something someday when I die. If I'm lucky enough to still have a home when I die, I want them to make a profit off my hardwork thru the years.
That's what parents do, they take care of their kids and leave things to pass on (money, property, whatever) to their descendants.
I don't work to support myself. I work to have a good life and give my children and grandchildren a good life.
That money going to Disney every year, that could be in savings and provide a good college education for your child.

When you buy a house you are buying the land it sits on. Buying land is always a good investment, because they will never make any more of it. Until they start to terraform Mars the land we have now is all there will ever be. Just do not buy a damn house unless you are absolutely positive that you can afford it. We have already seen what problems sub prime mortgages can cause.
I love Joes. They are delicious.

A couple years back, we had to relocate for my wife's job. Had to sell our house and move into an apartment. Longest year of my life. Apartment living is great until you get into a house. (having to go from a house to an apt. reaaaaaaally sucks.)
Houses come with multiple rooms. Sometimes enough room to dedicate one to all the crap one collects... I'm really happy to have one of those rooms.

depends on the individual and the home/apartment/condo/mobile home involved. Sounds like a cop out, but it's not. I'm old enough to have lived in the 3 of the 4 above options(no condo yet lol). Of the 3, the Mobile Home was the best for similar reasons somebody else posted. I was near no one. Privacy was great, it was real property the way I had it set up with the foundation and I actually sold it for more than I put into it. Should have kept it. Currently in a house. Neighbors suck, nuff said. They make noise, party etc fine. I crank up the NCAA basketball tourney they're knocking on my door. Sucks. Apartments I like, never had a bad experience in one surprisingly.
