A couple of other things too -
You REALLY need to KNOW what you are doing if you want to get the best value for your dollar if you start futzing w/ the computer system in your are - almost the equivilant of if you were going to boost up your PC, you had BETTER know WHAT to do or change to see any real speed or more power from it before you go throwing in a bunch of wiz bang computer programs / chips / drives/ ram to get any more speed from you PC.
Cars are only WORSE, as you better know HOW to make a car faster first and then WHAT that is computer controled you can change and what WILL make a difference too - not just a "chip" or re-burnning the software in the vehicle's computer.
Personally I'd go w/ some simple "known" mechanical stuff that will help first before I'd start blowing big bucks on the computer end of the car (gears, pulleys, larger flowing fuel system - injectors, fuel pump - better air flow intake system (an air box, special air filter, ect).
The other issue too is there is an old saying that goes "There is NO replacement for displacement ", meanig there is only SO much you can do w/ a given size engine / power plant before there is no other way to increase power but to go to somethine LARGER.
Sure some will argue (especially the "Fast and the Furious" crowd as I like to call the "tuners" (kids w/ little souped up Jap cars as compared to old school gearheads like me w/ old muscle cars you can gain a LOT w/ nitrous, blowers and turbos, but that also usually means more wear and tear on that smaller motor to get it to go that much faster and also making it work harder and sometimes at dangerous levels to achive anything w/ also.
"Oh dear" said Pooh, as he punched the magazine release...

So, here are my questions:
1) Is it possible to do this to the Ford Escape?
2) How high will it make it go?
3) Will I have to get different tires?
4) Will it screw with my speedometer?
5) Will it screw with my gas mileage?
1. Most likely... but it is a unibody with IFS (independent front suspension). An IFS lift for a Toyota truck like my dads 1990 4x4 pick-up cost over $600...
2. 1"-how much money you got...
3. A good potion of a life comes from them. If you leave the smaller ones on your vehicle you lift will be really tippy...
4. Oh yeah... We went from 28" inch tires on my dads Toyota to 31" inch. Was corrected by re-gearing (typical cost is about $600)
5. Dads MPG with 3' bigger tires went from 24 down to 19. Not only that but you will lose power going up hills on even just getting into traffic...
Now for a little more info...
Besides the fact that you can lift what ever you want, as some have said here do you really need to? I have an 1984 Toyota 4x4 I use for Rock Crawling/Trail Running and it has a total of 9" in the front and 11" in the rear running 35" tires. I gets about 12 MPG with a 4 cylinder, but thats what it's made for.
My dad did it because I wanted him too. He has 3" of lift but it's more so for tire clearance for at our property (out in the country).
Lifting a unibody: The only ones that are really lifted are Jeep Cherokees and they are a pain! We did it to one of my friends, with him doing all the work tii still cost him over $2000 to do it right.
To lift an Escape the right way would be at least $1000, for no more then 3'...
Warranty: I have worked at a Chevy dealer, Honda dealer, many other shops, and also managed a used car dealer. Dont void your warranty. If the car we sold came back and it was modified, you were out of luck...
Drawbacks to lifting:
1. lower MPG by at least a 1/4 if not more
2. Higher center of gravity, She will roll over much more easy if you need to avoid an accident
3. My lose your car insurance. My mom has told me never to say anything about my truck being lifted, she's an agent and knows what she is talking about.
4. Drivetrain WILL wear out faster. I can not tell you how many drive-line components I have replaced just because of the lift, the same with all my Jeep buddy's.
5. Cops will not like you. My truck is over the Government regulations and cops love to give you crap. I'm lucky they are nice where I live.
6. lowers your vehicle value. No one is going to buy it if you lift it. I have had many friends try and sell there deasle (spelling) trucks or lifted Jeeps and get less then if it was stock...
In my opinion, dont do it. More so dont do it to that vehicle. If you want to lift something, do it to something you can get use out of like a Toyota truck, 4Runner, Jeep, or any pick for that matter...
And what is what made for.... (this is my truck on it's side)

If you do this to a Ford Escape be prepared to upgrade to custom fabricated parts on a regular basis, it's extremely expensive.
Buy something already modified that was meant for this type of treatment.
It's NEVER as simple as $200.00 and you're lifted & good to go......NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!
But hey if you've got $10,000+ to make an Escape a few inches higher AND drive safely/reliably/legally by all means...

If you want to do performance, start with the easy cheap things. Intake system, free flowing exhaust (dont make it sound like a farting Honda), ignition system, fuel system, or wheels (will help with making your vehicle stable and also braking)...
The Ford Escape is a commuter/hiker rig. It's meant to get you where you need to go with good MPG.
Also with the economic times, I would leave it the way it is.... Or get something like this... This was a random 10 second search... lol

I think you guys have talked me out of doing a lift, and for very good reasons. I do have a question that is similar, though.
What about other parts, like hood scoops, mud flaps, spoilers, vents? How do they affect insurance and warranty? I know that things like spoilers can be purchased and installed with the dealer, as well as mudflaps, but I like the look of the hood scoops, and to my knowledge they don't affect the mechanics of the car (at least the fake hood scoops). Will any of it add value to your car or truck?
