My Grandpa did Join the Canadian forces during World War II but as I recall his duties were guarding german POWs, who had been transported back to Canada and he didn't get deployed overseas until the fighting was actually over.
his one souveneir that I saw was a german dagger.

On the subject of WW2 & 'Nam, Joe-sized figures are on clearance for $1 at Walmart in the Hot Wheels & Matchbox aisle. I grabbed a lot and can swap for the following
carded XD figs for loose XD or loose Joe figs or sell
If only Hasbro produced our Real G.I. Joes of WW2! Hasbro can do better with its cool new removable web-gear and better articulation. That would be great to see everyone's grandparents here as a 4 inch Joe. Maybe it'll happen @ Joe's 50th Anniversary.

My gramps was on Iowa Jima, from start to finish and he would never talk about what he saw or had to do. It wasn't until after he died and my granny gave me the letters he had corresponded with the men he served with that I learned what he had to endure and do.
Those dudes are awesome IMO. Sadly, they are vanishing fast

My grandfather (mom's dad) was in the Navy during WWII and my father served in the army right after the Korean War ended and before the Vietnam War began. He wasn't in either war.

My late grandfather was an Air Police officer in the Korean War.
He was also a cadet in WW2.
Never saw any action but was given a Germen helmet and a British helmet from a buddy of his.
He just passed away last year.
My father is a Lieutenant in the New York State Police though.

my grandpa and grandma lived in holland during ww2 and before going into active service with the dutch army, my grandpa got jaundice. because of that he was discharged and continued his civilian job of delivering groceries to the local farms.
one day while rolling down the road in his horse drawn buggy with a local boy, in a restricted zone, he was nearly strafed by a german fighter bomber. they tried to get out of dodge as fast as they could but he came back for a second pass and dropped a bomb, which fell in the field beside their place on the road. my grandpa ducked down to his side and the boy had no time to react. the bomb hit the naturally marshy soil in the field and blew mud out and covered half the horse and the boy in mud but no damage was done, lol ! my grandpa said that boy and horse looked like they were dipped perfectly halfway into the mud lengthwise, while he was clean as a whistle ,lol ! after that the german army started to become more and more harsh to the dutch people and my grandpa and his male family members joined to dutch resistance, giving canadian and british forces intel and smuggling people out of france and belgium.
i have plenty more stories from them i'll share with you all later

My stepdad who past away in December 2009 R.I.P.
Was a prisoner in a japanese camp in Indonesia. This is because he probably was a high class civillian, and/with his father having ties with the europeans at that time(so for that he was practically imprisoned I guess). He told me that in the camp, he used to work as a cook for the japs, and that he got beatings and used to steal food for his father that was also in the camp. Strangely, after the war he got a WWII complex/obsession, so I can remember that in the 80ies we use to built WWII tamiya models together, and watched alot of WWIImovies about the Pacific cause he had a big collection of books and laserdiscs/dvds.
