I agree completely. What people need to realize about the News is, it is a corporate sponsered entity that is trying to make a profit like everything else.
They get dictated what they can or can't report and how they report it. The bottom line is they only report the NEGATIVE DRAMA crap that people want to watch. If they reported good news, they would loose their rankings and therefore money. It boils down to this, out of all the negative crap that the News reports its only a small percentage of what really happened in the world today. If you put the negative crap next to the positive, I bet you a whole lot more positive happened... Sure it might be small stuff.. like MR. & MRS Jones had a great dinner together,... or Bob spent time with his son today... but isnt that really more important than.. OOOO BIRD FLU.. SCARE SCARE... DRAMA DRAMA.. or whatever the flavor of the day is. I used to be a news junkie but I finally said enough is enough ,now they are lucky if I even check CNN or NPR once a week. Life is what you believe it is.. make it what you want to be.

I don't pay attention to the news. It's all "shock and awe" designed to get maximum amount of viewers.

I am just about there too. I have limited myself as of late to local news and msn and thats only because msn is my home page.

As a Nursing student and a person who works in the medical field, let me say that right now Swine Flu is not that bad. The problem comes from the Pneumonia that comes with it. If you are already compromised or easily compromised that will kill you. Swine Flu also has the potential to mutate and become worse. All of this is no different than any other flu outbreak. So yes the media is just ramping up the news to gain viewers.
The real sad thing with the news is that while they are helpful sometimes, most of the time they do more harm.

The term "responsible journalism" does not exist in today's newscast. The problem with the news going on about the swine flu, bird flu, SARS, Mad Cow is that they are starting to develop a "boy who cried wolf" syndrome. People don't believe them anymore. And what is scary is, what if things start to go real bad and nobody believe them.
Again, responsible journalism.

Well, in fairness, there is "good" news out there if you look for it. Of course, everyone will cover the swine flu, because it is newsworthy (even if the CNN's and Fox News's of the world are blowing things way out of proportion).
New York Times, the Washington Post, the Economist, Wall Street Journal (though it is getting worse and worse since Murdoch took over), the Financial Times (UK), the Jim Lehrer News Hour, and weekly TV news shows like Washington Week, Meet the Press, Reliable Sources, etc. are just some of the news outlets worth reading/watching. Just stay away from the Nightly National News, and CNN/Fox News with a very few exceptions. |
