i agree with sisco.
i caught the antivrus 2009 bug and it fried my home pc. oddly enough, the only place i have seen it was through myspace. a work friend in IT had a device that let me back up all my music and personal files from the fragged hd to an external. wiped it and reinstalled the os and everything else. i tried malwarebytes and it would not load. byt the time i was going to try avg-free, it was dead, would not even boot. but, malwarebytes is a good way to go. so is avg-free, esp'ly since it scans incoming and outgoing e-mails. i also heard of another, i think it is called clamwins. i know IT folks and systems engineers that swear by it. good luck to you. my corp keeps everything locked down so tight we cannot install anything on our laptops -- freeware, owned software, printers. the joys of working for a huge corp. but, if it got busted or fried by my starbucks, they'd replace it. give me flack, but replace it.

tankers, thanks for all of the valuable info. I got my pc fixed and working fine. Just got a little file clean up left. While we are on the subject of pc's, does anyone know of any softwares that can be installed to delete old cookies or files to help enhance the pc's speed (to reach the speed that my pc originally had when it was newer)?

I'm sorry but I can't beleive people fall for that crap. The so-called anti-virus program IS the virus and naive people download the virus willingly. Get yourself a really good antivirus program like Kaspersky and try to get all the crap out.

I am reaching out to my fellow tankers...I think I really did it this time. My work laptop is not working right. Some pop-up suggested my PC was in need of a virus scan (looked legitimate) so I clicked on the window, it performed a virus scan, then said that I have a ton of errors and viruses. It then wanted to to continue the repair process but I got skeptical and closed out of the software. But the damage was done. Our spyware software (pre installed) did capture numerous Trojans, but my computer is still acting up. Specifiacally, I keep getting a pop-up sating that Internet Explorer has been forced to close down since it may contain a virus???? This pops up even when I am not using Internet Explorer. It must be blocking some sort of pop up virus? Anyway, I tried to remove the internet explorer (V7.0) but the system wont let me remove the software (weird). Anyway, now I got a corrupt laptop and if my boss finds out, it wont be pretty. Can anyone who is knowledgable on here please help me clean up these viruses and remove internet explorer? Thanks in advance!
I can't see why you'd be fired for that, though. These types of things are the reason your company has an IT department. Have you been doing something with your work lap-top that contradict company policy? If you have, then just come clean with the IT guy and he'll resolve the problem without brinig your superiors into it. Unless, of course, the IT guy is a total d-bag. |

Also, never click on any pop up that says you have viruses and they want to scan. Even clicking No or Xing it out will sometimes not help. Whenever something like that pops up on my pc, I go to Windows Task Manager>Applications tab>End Task. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

I never thought about ending suspicious pop-up windows by going to the task manager to shut it down I just always assume xing it out is safe. Thanks for the tip.

download ccleaner if you want to clean up your cookies, temp and unnecessary files.
also if you use Firefox you can set the program to clear your private data (cookies and temp internet files) on exit. |
