I knew it was only a matter of time before someone brought up the Ipod comparison. Here's the BIG reason why you can't compare the two. A huge part to the Ipod's success is not only for it's improvement from the previous format, but ease and *personal desire* to make everyday entertainment more efficient and practical in another way as well.
My Ipod kills the time, while I wait for that Train...My Ipod keeps me company, while I drive Cross-Country in my car. My Ipod keeps me focused, while I run on the Treadmill.....I could go on and on...Much of the Ipod's strength has relied/relies on the sheer fact that it actually serves a multitude of puposes in various situations aside from the home. You can take it where ever you want and hardly even notice it.
Aside from the fact that it stores what only literally piles of CD's once could, that it's biggest selling point.
I don't know about you, but when I watch a movie unless it's in a theater...it's either IN my house or someone else's. I don't watch movies in the car...I don't watch movies at the gym...etc. For that reason, the tangible factor is still in play as the disc isn't as much as an inconvenience.
It requires no effort for me to get up and open a cabinet, grab a disc, and press play.....in the privacy and comfort of my own home non-the less, which is what I want in the first place. In-fact thats as easy as it can be. The more technical something becomes, the more the general population is going to struggle with it.
I'm not saying that the digital download format isn't coming in some way, shape or form in the future, but not anytime soon, and not for the same exact reasons as the Ipod.

Unfortunately, my best friend chose HD over Blue Ray... when they all went clearance (at ridiculously reduced prices) he snatched up a crap load of them.
Of course, if anything happens to the machine he's S.O.L., but until that happens he has endless days of HD movie watching ahead of him.

Yeah, but I guess Blu-Ray is suppose to be getting bigger soon, so its looking like tough luck for your friend.

I followed the format wars from the very beginning, the big issue with both formats initially was that the players and media were expensive for the general consumer, plus the fact that studios were starting to choose only to support one format further muddied the waters. Sony got a slight advantage on the hardware side by including a blu-ray drive in their PS3, but the media was still 2x what a normal DVD pricing was. And as it has been mentioned in this thread most people can't tell a difference between 480p and 1080p.
I ended up buying a HDDVD player about 2 weeks before Toshiba shut down their venture. At the time the HDDVD player price dropped below $200 and I thought that would be the nail in Blu Ray coffin, since Sony was still selling their players for $500+. Unfortunately at the same time of the major price drop for HD-DVD two studios ended their support for HD-DVD, time warner and paramount. A few weeks later Toshiba pulled the plug on HD-DVD.
I think if Toshiba had got on board with the movie studios early and made all new dvd release dual format dvd / HD-DVD (since the laser and manufacturing process are the same) consumers would have had a pre-built HD library when the time came for them to buy a new player.
