Well, it's something I have looked into for years, and now I am actually starting to work on it. I was wondering if anyone else in here have ever worked on one of these, because I am hitting a couple of snags and trying to find the easiest ways to learn how to set up frontends and what not.
Now the info I am looking for is solely ideas on Mame itself, the arcade cabinet/controller ideas, and front ends...NOT ROMS. To my knowledge, this can all be discussed without any issues, as long as how to obtain ROMS is not discussed. Is this correct? If so, I would love to hear any advice on setting this up, as I am curious if anyone else here has built one of these.

Well I got a lot of the software stuff done. Im up to about 150 games total yay!
Im running a front end program called MALA and its connecting to seperate mames (Mame and Mame32). I should be ordering an X Arcade Tank stick (2 players plus trackball) and once I get it, I will be able to actually work on the cabinet part of this project! (again, YAY!). Im trying to decide the best route to go for a monitor, I would like a good sized one, but not real for sure what to focus on (TV vs CRT PC monitor vs LCD PC Monitor) Its been a blast, even got my mom hooked on playing Galaga when she is over. Its all ran through my keyboard at the moment, but damn what memories this thing brings back! Cant wait to get it into a cabinet! Again, if anyone has any experience in this, I would love to chat about the actual hardware when working with the cabinet aspects (whether or not to keep my tower in a case, or split it apart in the cabinet, monitors, etc.) Would love to hear anyones take on these things, Youtube them if you are unfamiliar, I guarantee you will think they are great as hell! Ive even been playing the old arcade game of GI Joe, got my nephews playing it earlier! What a blast this thing is!

Okay software issues aside if I were in your shoes this is what I'd do. LCD monitor, it will increase the in cabinet heat but, it will allow you to cut the overall cabinet depth by at least half. Mount the actual computer in a skeleton frame horizontally behind the joysticks in the deepest part of the cabinet. In the part of the cabinet that is traditionally the coinbox I'd have a fan pointed straight up. That way all the heat generated by the CPU & monitor could be pushed right out of a vent in the top of the cabinet. Add a vent in the very back bottom of the cabinet along with a long corded surge protector in the very bottom and you are in business. Hell you can even plug a top cabinet light (behind painted Plexiglas of course) in that power bar in the bottom to get that old school top light arcade feel. That way I'd have a traditional arcade cabinet that would fit in any domicile with only one cord in the wall.

Thats some hellacious ideas! Huge thanks, as I am sure I will incooporate some of that word for word! This is the first one Ive ever done, and its been a hell of a learning experience. I have a feeling I will be making another one sometime down the road (now that Ive got an idea of the whole process) and may give this first one, eventually, to my brother for his bar area in his basement.
Again thanks for the ideas!!

With my MAME cabinet I chose not to go with an LCD monitor, because these games were originally displayed on monitors with far worse resolution, and modern computer monitors have a way of making the games look worse. I went with a 27 inch television as my stand in until I get my hands on an actual arcade monitor. To hook the tv to my pc I used an adaptor from grandtec.com. As far as my front end goes, I'm currently using atomicfe which has been the easiest for me to configure, and looks pretty good.

I honestly dont know much about it. I bought it from a guy off craigslist. Its an old NBA jam cabnet and I think the system it runs it gameEX. It has 2100 games on it thur game EX plus has all the Daphnie games ( dragons lair, space ace ect. ) he was also able to load up all the NES and super NES games on it as well. The only bad thing about it is that about 200 of the 2100 mame games dont run properly. I wish I knew enough about it to fix them. Guess I'll end up paying someone to go in a clean it up for me. But for what it has and the price I paid I love it. Good luck with yours man.

Yeah, I got into this pretty late really. It was pretty big in early 2000 up to around 2005, and I had always planned on doing it, but just never got around to it till lately.
Now everywhere I go to get info, there are dead links it seems, all the forum topics seem to be from at least 2-3 years ago, so it's been kind of a pain trying to learn and troubleshoot on these new versions of MAME, when all the forums are dealing with older version. Been a hell of a learning experience, but a lot of fun too, and I feel like the payoff is gonna be great. Ill probably go the lazy way out and just buy a controller (probably an X Arcade Tank Stick, since it seems like all the other major mame ready joystick manufacturers are no longer in business it seems) Seems to be a decent stick, and for my first go around (I may make another one, and make it a bit more higher quality), it seems that it will do the trick. I may play around with using a TV at first, because I would like my monitor to be 27", and that size in arcade monitors seems a bit out of my price range right now, but I would love to get one.

The X-Arcade Tank stick with trackball is AWESOME! and way easier and cheaper than trying to build one yourself.
I have access to 7500 games, of course they have to be deleted within 24hours.....ummmmm......yeppers....that's what I do. I am actually using the bottom half of a Sony PS2 store arcade, with an X-arcade tank stick mounted on rails on the front and running an Acer laptop as machine and monitor. Very effective - I will try to add some pics later.
