I usually tip in the 16-17% range. A great waiter will get around 20% from me, though. Lousy servers will get around 10%. And here's a tip (aha, no pun intended!), if you ever get incredibly bad service don't walk out and leave no tip because then the server might just think you forgot. I leave some change or a buck or something when this happens so that they know they f'ed up or sucked. I have only had such horrible service two or three times in my life where I thought this was justified, though.

I have bartended, waited tables, washed dishes, and my wife waitressed a couple of years when we first got married. There wasn't a day that went by that somebody didn't bitch about being stiffed or shorted tipwise, and vast majority of the time it was someting they did. People don't like to be accountable for anything, it is always someone else's fault.
Oh, and I work for the Govt, so I am use to bitching people, and those fuckers never leave a tip! I was born and raised in the UK so i'm used to working in the service industry and not getting tipped. Servers and stuff work on the same pay scale as every other unqualified job. |

Me and several family members/friends went out to eat last night and they added the tip to the bills. He called it gratuity or whatever because there we're more than 8 of us,which was bull shit because it was to seperate bills and he counted the children, plus he shouldve told us this in the first place. I didnt complain because me nor my wife was the ones paying so whatever. The waitor did his job but he clearly had an attitude. Both bills caim out to about 350 which included like 50 dollars worth of tips. I didnt know a resterant could add a tip to a bill... On a side note, i hate when a person invites you out to eat, their treat, you order the cheapest dish trying to be reasonable(I didnt really want to go,I only went to not offend the person) and they're ordering like there is no tomorrow, then when the bill come, they start acting funny analizing everything you ordered, supposedly joking about splitting the bill x amount of ways, then when you offer to pay for your part and your part only, they say no they got it,then reluctantly pays.... God I hate my in-laws

That gratuity crap is complete Bullshit. When I was in HS a group of us (5) went to a restaurant and being kids with little money ordered on the cheap. The bill comes and it is about double what we owe do to a gratuity because we had over 4 people and it was on separate checks. We had to scrape to come even close, and we told them take it or leave it. They told us not to come back. Bastards could have at least told us before we ordered.
Also, split checks doesn't matter, the total number at the table matters. Basically it's insurance for a server having two or more tables of their 4-5 table section be taken up by a bigger table and getting nothing in return for it. Bigger tables are more apt to sit around after eating and do nothing but chat, sometimes for an hour or more after eating. If a server were to get 10% or less on this table, he'd effectively be losing a ton of money on the night and wasting a huge chunk of his time. You might say it is crap, but management at these places know sometimes people are cheapasses and do not tip, or maybe tip $5 regardless of the bill. Well take a table of 8 at a moderately priced restaurant, that's a $136 bill for a table that probably wouldn't order alcohol or appetizers, $5 is a slap in the face for the work they'd have to put in on an 8 top. Even $10 would be a slap in the face to a competent server, considering at most places he'd have to pay out ~$4 to the bartenders, busboys and hosts (most places I've worked at, you pay out 3% of sales to these guys, 1% to each.) Gratuity insures management that their worker won't bust their tail for free or some change.

I will usually tip 20%. If they have terrible service and they aren't busy. No tip. Not my fault that you don't give customer service in a customer service industry. If you can't get to the table and your slammed....You will get a 10-15% tip. Tipping is lame though. Add it to the bill and pay your employees better.

Most restaurants add gratuity to bills with parties over a certain number of people. Jesus dude I'm a FOB and I know that. :P But yea its complete BS, i don't agree with that at all. I feel bad that servers only get around $2.50 an hour but allow me to add my own damn tip. Its a greed tax to me nothing more nothing less. |
