I would have rathered gotten stiffed than a tip from someone using a tip calculator. it's the principle. at least the cheap ass who doesn't leave anything is confident in his practice and doesn't have to resort to some pre-fabricated amount.

Okay, here's a slightly different spin. We've considered food/takeout/bar tips, but what about other tips that people expect?
I don't give a damn to admit it, I got my haircut as a kid at the neighborhood barbershop, and get my haircut now at SuperCuts, or the like. My haircut (I consider it the "generic male haircut") is pretty hard to fuck up, and I shouldn't have to pay much for 15 minutes in a chair to make the sides of my hair half as long as the top, and to blend between. I could do it myself if I could remove my head and still see what I was doing, but I can't. So the haircut runs around $15, I usually tip $3-$5, since it took 15 minutes or less, depending on how awkward my forced conversation went in the chair. When I get my car washed at the drive-thru carwash, it, again, costs $15 or so, and I tip $3-$5, depending on how well clean & dried off the car is. There's not much else I can think of that I tip for. Perhaps I'm uncouth, but I will not tip those bathroom valets who hand you a towel and want to try and mist you with some product, and I am not lazy (or rich) enough to ever need to use a valet for parking. The few times I do, I tip a few bucks, but I feel that's such a stupid and lazy thing to have to pay for, so I avoid it at all costs. |

I feel for servers i really do. I work in retail and earn sub $10 per hour.
I don't know how much the food service industry get paid per hour, but i would love to get tipped so i try and not be tight with my tipping. |

I remember a while back around here, the first day a waitress would work, they would have to keep 20 bucks in their 'tip' account at all times, so that way during a slow day their employer could write it off as at least making minimum wage (20 + slow tips). Can't remember the chain, but its out of business now.

CA doesn't have that law, so we got standard minimum wage plus our tips. any restaurant that tried to fuck me out of making up the difference from the $2.15 would get hit so hard. I believe all you need is 25 other employees who got screwed as well and you have a major class action lawsuit. and there are plenty of labor lawyers waiting for that call. restaurants get busted all the time out here for dipping into the tip pool and forcing servers to tip out employees who don't fit the criteria of tipped employees. |
