Hey just wanted to see if any Tankers are into the old Universal Monsters and that classic horror stuff..
I laid off for a long time but still enjoy my collection of figures, models and movies.....I have quite a few Sideshow 12" and I can honestly say they have never disapointed. The 12" Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf Man, Phantom..and many more I own, buy my favirote is the Lon Chaney figure from London After Midnight/The Unholy Three.....I have some 3 3/4 stuff of a glow in the Dark Creature from the Black Lagoon and Dracula...both in bad shape, both were hunted by Joes lol. I still love the Universal films...and I actually just watched Wolf Man the other day..looking foward to the remake too!! Though the Abott and Costello movies are still awesome... Anyway I know Im a little young to be such a fan of this stuff, but I just remember something like this always being on over my grandmothers house as a kid, and looking in my uncles room he had remnants of those old Aurora kits....great stuff, Just seeing if theres any fans here |

I'd like to see a Graf Orlok custom from 1922's Nosferatu.

You aren't too young to be a fan of the classics! I enjoy the Universal horror films as well - although not really too scary, it is interesting to see how movies have progressed over time and what was progressive at the time. Watch Murnau's Nosferatu and imagine that a lot of people still did not have indoor plumbing and rode horses rather than cars. Murnau's Faust is one of my faves. Not universal, but almost the same era
Abbott and Costello are another story. I have almost all their Universal films on DVD and watch one every Sunday like I did growing up. The A&C Monster movies were always a favorite.. And toys - I had all the Remco monster figures when I was little. And now I have the Lon Chaney sidshows plus Sideshow Nosferatu. I was tempted to buy the remakes of the Aurora kits - especially those torture chamber ones. I did get a Universal monster chess set at Spencer's a few years back - Frankenstein vs the Mummy. |

The Universal stuff is great! The monsters are classic -- incredibly important to the hsitory of popular film and worthy of all the love they can get! I'm a big, big horror fan and while those Universal monsters didn't start the horror genre they certainly went a long way towards popularizing it.
If you haven't seen them, I highly recommend the UNiversal Legacy series DVDs from a few years back. There's a lot of great movies, and some great documentaries too.

Arrrrrggghhh...you had to say Torture Chamber!! I'm trying to keep my finances on one collection here! I have one of the Aurora remakes..The Wolf Man which I built and still have the box, though I am missing a rat from the kit..had an accident years ago, and one snapped off. I remember the original Phantom of the Opera one and my uncle had some kind of "prisior" kit with it...man, that was so cool....and the other thing was Remco, thats the 3 in glow in the dark figures..wow. The monsters themselves be it Nosferatu or Creature from the Black Lagoon, that entire genre then as it modernized into subgenres of 1950's B Rated horror sci fi i.e. Vampira, Vincent Price, Zacherly. I cant say enough about it. No they are not "scary" not by todays standard anyway, but for their time it was horror and cutting edge effects, which took creativity and even elbow grease. The difference, to me anyway with these monsters and modern horror is the charecterization. They have the depth of comic book heros. Frankenstein is an outsider in need of a friend, on the run...sort of luck the Hulk....and sort of what alot of frustrated young guys might feel like. When I was 15 I watched Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein so much I practically wore the tapes out. The Mummy was a love story, the Creature a savage, theWolf Man actually a victim, and Bela Lugosi as Dracula to me is one of the greatest on screen villians of all time. These are charecters ppl can connect with. Growing up in the 80's I get a big kick out of Jason and Freddy, but do you ever feel sympathy? Want to see them win or find yourself in them? Its apples and oranges..but the classic guys were really so much more then "monsters". Cool to see other people here passionate about this..lets keep this thread going! "Even a man who is pure may become a wolf. When the wolfsbane blooms and the autmn moon is bright...theres a full moon tonight." |

Well, if we didn't have them, the movies I love wouldn't exist. But I never really liked when they were made 'kiddie' in the '60s. Although the recent anime/visual kei versions of those characters (In many mediums) are something I like a lot.
But I have a JAKKS Pacific Bela Lugosi as Dracula...although the 'dirt' they included is more like aquarium gravel. However, the appeal lies in the history and folklore of these creatures. It's more fun finding out where they came from centuries ago. And also one of the reasons I like the Sommersverse so much. There's a lot more to those films than explosions and Victoria's Secret models. Oh, and obligatory cosplay photos-

I love that stuff...pure classic.
I bought the Wolfman, Frankie, Drac, CFTBL and Mummy from KB when they were on clearance....they're great and made very well. They all say series 1.....I'd love a series 2 but I doubt it's coming. I need a Hunchback, Phantom of the Opera and Bride of Frankenstein |
