Oh, I just remembered the most important one!
That money was NOT the most important thing in life. I can remember even up to a couple of years ago lecturing people that there were more important things in life than having money. BALDERDASH!!! POPPYCOCK!!! UNADULTERATED ABSURDITY!!! Last edited by Barefoot Jedi; 03-07-2009 at 03:56 AM.. |

Honestly, I wasn't a stupid child.
I would watch TV and see commercials where that super-fast voice-over guy would say "Barbie does not really move or talk by herself, but you can make her!" and likewise things, like "missiles do not actually fire on their own", and at 5 or 6, I would sit and think to myself, what dumbass kids are thinking that? I did believe anything my parents told me, but they were genuinely good people, and didn't try to pull things over on me. I learned quickly that when I asked if we could go to Toys Я Us, that if my mother said "maybe", that meant a poorly-veiled "no". |

That was me, too. Now I see my kids trying it with their toy light sabers.

I could write a very angry book on this.
Here are a few: If you act up in school it'll be on your "permanent record." I actually remember having terror in school that if I fucked up I wouldn't be able to get a job, be on the streets, etc. as an adult. I thought that if you got good grades in school, then you were set for life and if you failed school, then you were doomed to a life of poverty. Now I sit in my office with my master's degree and counsel people who have a seventh grade education and can barely write their own name but learned a useful trade and make three times as much as me. Doh! My mom caught me adjusting the thermostat in the house one day and told me I could blow up the house if I didn't do it right and never to touch it again, and to this day I have mild anxiety whenever I adjust a thermostat. I could go on and on but I'm giving myself a headache. I forgot about the permanent record thing... I also use to buy into that and think that any little F up along the way was going to haunt me forever! How funny

We tricked my cousin into believing his belly button was a doggy. He was like in 2nd or 3rd grade before he stopped pointing at his belly button and going this is my doggy.
