My condolences.
That actually reminds me of my Dad and something he would have said. Interestingly enough, one of the bad lessons my family tried to teach me never really sunk in. I'll always remember when I was in kindergarten, coming home to tell my mom that I had a girlfriend, and when she asked me the little girl's name and I said "Lawanda," how that smile turned upside down very quick, and she explained to me how "little White boys" and "little colored girls" could be "friends" but how we were not supposed to be "boyfriend and girlfriend." I don't remember this next part, but she said later on I was watching an episode of "Family Feud" and there was a family with a Black husband and a White wife and I exploded and was like, YOU SAID PEOPLE WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO DO THAT! to which her response was something like, well, trashy people do that but we don't. My parents were always on the cutting edge of social progress, as you see. True story. Last edited by Barefoot Jedi; 03-07-2009 at 03:32 AM.. |

My parents were always on the cutting edge of social progress, as you see. True story. Some people grew up in a different era. For him it was the jokes... never mind that one of his best friends was black and called him Oreo all the time! Still not sure I understood that one. I can't think of any other instances... I wasn't a very gullible child, and people didn't tend to lie. I always knew that the people in the costumes at Disneyland were just people in costumes, and I always had that "feeling" about Santa Claus, but never told my family that I didn't believe. My wife and I always exchange gifts on Christmas to each other labeled "From Santa"... and we don't have kids. It's just the fun thing to do. |

Another time I really thought that if I concentrated enough I could use the force like Luke and retrieve the remote control from across the room. I always had a tiny amount of self doubt... that's probably why it never worked. I thought the same thing....sometimes I still try. |

I can't ever remember really believing in the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus but looking back, I was INCREDIBLY naive about real life and swallowed a LOT of garbage. My adult life has been this surreal shredding of childhood delusional innocence. I'm sure that's a big part of the reason books/movies/television fantasy worlds have always been so appealing to me.

I didn't believe in ghosts until I had an experience with a flying plate of hamburgers. Which was odd... normally people believe in something and then learn it was a figment of their imagination. Instead I grew up thinking they were full of crap... then the flying plate incident of 2003.
