I am wondering does anyone know of Goldfish as a pet?
My situation is this. My wife and I had 2 goldfish since 1 1/2 ago from a Carnival. My wife just recently got two other fish from a neighbor and we waited for several hours to put them in the fish tank we have. Last week one of them "died" and the other one had some black stuff on the head, dorsal fin and the back fins and then some how whatever the smaller fish from my neighbor gave whatever black thing to my wifes fish named Edy and Evy. Does anyone know if that maybe a fish disease or some fungus? My wife bought some medicine called Maroxy. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks for the help.

Im into aquariums too.. when it comes to your fish getting sick.. all you can do is go to the fish atore & tell them the ailment & see if they can recommend a good antibiotic for them.. some kind of fish medicine.. sounds pretty bad though.. sometimes nothing can sav them... good luck!

My fiancee works in a fish store. She has a few questions:
1. What size is the fish tank? 2. Have you checked the water quality? (Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite & Ph) |

Water quality refers to the PH, ammonia, and nitrite readings of the water. Goldfish produce alot of waste so their water should be changed often. Please remember to add a declorinator if you dont use well water. The water should have a PH around 7 or slighly above, they prefer their water alkaline (above 7) instead on acidic (below 7). Since they produce a lot of waste this could build up the ammonia levels in your water (you want them at 0). If these levels start climbing your fish can be poisoned, water changes will keep this low also.
Maroxy is used for treating baterial/fungus infections opposed to parasitic infections so the meds are correct IF your fish are sick. Cant tell if your tank has a filter or just an air bubbler. If it has a filter with carbon (small black rocks), it will need to be removed since they will abosrb the meds. my two cents - I would recommend getting atleast a 10 gallon aquarium for them with a small hang on filter for the back. Hope it helps. Last edited by Glumby; 02-17-2009 at 04:32 PM.. |

I once had a fish from a fair. It died within 48hours. You can try and save your fish, but goldfish are really just disposable pets. Feed, flush, repeat. Don't forget you can probably buy several new goldfish for the price of the meds. Still good luck with your effort.

you can get test kits at the pet store but I would save $$ and just change 3/4 of the water every week and that should keep levels where you need them. Again if you dont have a well you should use a declorinator. Goldfish are tough fish and can take alot more than tropical fish. You had the original ones for awile so sounds like you are doing fine. I just wouldnt add ANY other fish to the aquarium.
In the future if you decide to upgrade I would recommend the test kits. You should be able to find kits that contain the basic needs of fish at your petstore. LMK if you have any more questions. |

1. sounds like something called "ick" - fish disease from what I can remember when we had a tank years ago.
2. Get a BIGGER tank 3. Get a BETTER filter as advised 4. Maintain it regularly - how would you like to sit in / bath in the same water for MONTHS :( either buy a how to book or follow the filter's instructions. My ex and I started with a small tank and some "starter" gold fish, one of them lasted for quite a while as others have stated, until he was outgrowing the tank. We then were given a larger tank (like 2' wide by 4' long and about 2' high - a BIG one) and transferred Mr giant gold fish over to his new home. Needless to say he thrived in it until he died quite a while later, ending up at least about 4 or 5 inches in length! Not bad for a little .50 gold fish. His name? "Jaws" of course. HTH
