Since July I've been full time freelance for Rubbermaid doing packaging design. Now I've been out of work for two weeks. Trying to decide whether or not to seek full time employment at a design firm/ ad agency / in house . .or do a start up . . . though right now doesn't seem to be the most spectacular time to do so. At least I have smaller freelance projects on the side.

All you guys that got laid off, especially during Christmastime with kids, I offer my greatest sympathy. Our companies are the great vampires of our times- they take our youth, our vigor, and our best years, then cast aside our empty husks as they swell, gorged on our essence, and go on to bleed the next victims dry...
I would counsel you this- keep looking for work- there may be something out there- but if there is not, and you're sitting at rock bottom, use this opportunity to follow a dream, start working for yourself, find a niche and fill it. That way when the big vampire comes looking for blood again you can tell them to piss off. Like we say in the Airborne... If you're going through Hell..... KEEP GOING! |

The company I workd for for 15 + yrs. closed down July 15th 2008. I started there when I was 18 and now i'm almost 35. I devoted so many years and hours into this place that the kind of work I do; is the only kind of work I know. I have since tried working for temp agencies, but I cannot make a living on working one day here and maybe 3 days there. I was also doing seasonal work at TRU and TARGET but those jobs ended as well.
I would go back to school for something, but I really do not know what I am interested in anymore since I am so used to doing the same thing for so many years. A friend of mine told me the oter day he has been wanting to open a comic shop for a long time and wanted me to go in on it with him, I had to say no because I know nothing about running a business and can't afford the risk. |

I work in the Boating Industry. And as many of you may know a lot of companies out there have closed there doors or reduced their amount of employees drastically. At my place we have went from 10 to 11 boats/day with almost 900 people to 4 boats/day and around 300 people.
I am lucky somewhat because I have specially job. But my job could get cut anytime. It is truly scary times. |
