^ Well then, they must be posted!
Mercenary's Lament by Sebastian Bludd When you're feeling low and woozy Slap a fresh clip in your Uzi Assume the proper firing stance And make the suckers jump and dance! A mercenary's job is a heartless one I'm a soldier for hire, like a pawn-shop gun My ruthless tactics keep you on your toes 'Cause I fight 'em all, whether friends or foes! |

some selections from poetry 180, the library of congress's poem a day for high school students.
From On Being Fired Again Erin Belieu I've known the pleasures of being fired at least eleven times- most notably by Larry who found my snood unsuitable, another time by Jack, whom I was sleeping with. Poor attitude, tardiness, a contagious lack of team spirit; I have been unmotivated squirting perfume onto little cards, while stocking salad bars, when stripping covers from romance novels, their heroines slaving on the chain gang of obsessive love- and always the same hard candy of shame dissolving in my throat; handing in my apron, returning the cash- register key. And yet, how fine it feels, the perversity of freedom which never signs a rent check or explains anything to one's family... also, because i like them a lot: Hate Poem Julie Sheehan I hate you truly. Truly I do. Everything about me hates everything about you. The flick of my wrist hates you. The way I hold my pencil hates you. The sound made by my tiniest bones were they trapped in the jaws of a moray eel hates you. Each corpuscle singing in its capillary hates you. Look out! Fore! I hate you. The blue-green jewel of sock lint I’m digging from under by third toenail, left foot, hates you. The history of this keychain hates you. My sigh in the background as you explain relational databases hates you. The goldfish of my genius hates you. My aorta hates you. Also my ancestors. A closed window is both a closed window and an obvious symbol of how I hate you. My voice curt as a hairshirt: hate. My hesitation when you invite me for a drive: hate. My pleasant “good morning”: hate. You know how when I’m sleepy I nuzzle my head under your arm? Hate. The whites of my target-eyes articulate hate. My wit practices it. My breasts relaxing in their holster from morning to night hate you. Layers of hate, a parfait. Hours after our latest row, brandishing the sharp glee of hate, I dissect you cell by cell, so that I might hate each one individually and at leisure. My lungs, duplicitous twins, expand with the utter validity of my hate, which can never have enough of you, Breathlessly, like two idealists in a broken submarine. and I’ve Been Known Denise Duhamel to spread it on thick to shoot off my mouth to get it off my chest to tell him where to get off to stay put to face the music to cut a shine to go under to sell myself short to play myself down to paint the town to fork over to shell out to shoot up to pull a fast one to go haywire to take a shine to to be stuck on to glam it up to vamp it up to get her one better to eat a little higher on the hog to win out to get away with to go to the spot to make a stake to make a stand to stand for something to stand up for to snow under to slip up to go for it to take a stab at it to try out to go places to play up to get back at to size up to stand off to slop over to be solid with to lose my shirt to get myself off to get myself off the hook and one more... Gee, You’re So Beautiful That It’s Starting to Rain Richard Brautigan Oh, Marcia, I want your long blonde beauty to be taught in high school, so kids will learn that God lives like music in the skin and sounds like a sunshine harpsichord. I want high school report cards to look like this: Playing with Gentle Glass Things A Computer Magic A Writing Letters to Those You Love A Finding out about Fish A Marcia’s Long Blonde Beauty A+!

To lucasta, on going to the wars.
Richard Lovelace Tell me not, Sweet, I am unkind, That from the nunnery Of thy chaste breast and quiet mind To war and arms I fly. True, a new mistress now I chase, The first foe in the field; And with a stronger faith embrace A sword, a horse, a shield. Yet this inconstancy is such As thou, too, shalt adore; I could not love thee, Dear, so much, Loved I not Honor more.
