Sorry but I just have to vent a bit....
When I was a kid Toys R Us was the mack daddy of all toy stores. They had it all. Nothing ever out of stock and wall to wall action figures. You name it they had it. It was such a thrill going to TRU when I was young I'd often have goose bumps just walking through the door. When did it all change? It's almost sad that you can never find anything on the shelf anymore. My TRU has not restocked since before Christmas. Why? The same lonely figures (not just Joe) stare at me every trip I make. What a let down. Are they in financial trouble? I know times change but this is pathetic. My kids will never know what a magical place TRU once was. |

I agree. As a kid I used to love going to TRU, seemed like heaven. I guess times change, and it is not what it once was. Target and Wal mart usually have far more of what I am looking for.

TRU is owned by a private company and they are bleeding money. Many of my former fellow employees are jumping ship quickly. I know what you mean I started to work at TRU b/c of my fond childhood memories and it was a major let down when I started working there. I wouldn't be surprised if they were out of business in 5 years.

It's really sad. They seem to have more clothes, video games, movies, etc than toys anymore.

I just had this conversation recently with my Dad as we were walking out of TRU here.
I too have those fond memories and the closest TRU to me was nearly four hours away. But once or twice a year we would make the trek and I would be in heaven. It seemed they were still the place to be up until about the early 2000's That seems to be when things declined quickly. Honestly I don't think anything in this country has been the same since 911. But still I think a lot of it has to do with kids. They just are not as in to toys as we were. They are in to Sports & Video Games.

Everyone has an Xbox or Playstation. Kids just don't play with action figures like we used to. Kind of makes you wonder what the industry will be like 25 years form now. Will we even see 50th ann releases? Will there be any demand at all?

Yeah. TRU sucks. Ours has no single packs, one comic pack, a few heroes. Oddly, they have a bunch of SRO packs. Except the IG one.
But its disappointing going there. I never find anything. |

from wikipedia:
After several major missteps in the marketplace, mainly precipitated by the removal of a member of its Board of Directors, Toys "R" Us experienced difficulty.[citation needed] In an effort to improve its company, the Board of Directors installed John Eyler, formerly of FAO Schwarz. Eyler launched an unsuccessful, and very expensive plan to remodel and re-launch the chain. Blaming market pressures (primarily competition from Wal-Mart and Target), Toys "R" Us considered splitting its toys and baby businesses. On July 21, 2005, a consortium of Bain Capital Partners LLC, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR), and Vornado Realty Trust completed the $6.6 billion acquisition of the toy giant. Public stock closed for the last time at $26.74, just pennies from the 52-week high, but far short of its all time high of almost $45 in fourth-quarter 1993, and its five-year high of $31 in 2Q 2001. Toys "R" Us is now a privately owned entity. |
