I was thinking the same thing when I stepped in to the rather sad TRU here in Burbank. The store is usually pretty empty and the selection, most of the time, sucks.
I actually point TRU's demise to when they remodeled all the stores to be like FAO Schwarz or something. Originally, when they just had aisle after aisle setup, it truly was great. Even if you had to walk past a whole bunch of crap just to get into the store, it probably helped with their sales. I also remember when TRU was a big "treat" - growing up in Annapolis MD the closest one to us was Lanham, MD, and when we'd go there (also like once a year) it was the most awesome exciting trip ever. We had a Kiddie City up on Ritchie Highway too and in some ways it was even cooler because they discounted things. I remember when my parents got my Terror Drome for my birthday there for $29. $29!!!! |

It's really just the nature of business. As others have mentioned, once upon a time little mom & pop shops dominated cities. Then along came Toys R Us and Lionel Playworld who drove a lot of the little mom & pop shops out of business. Now the discount retailers doing the same thing to the large toy stores. I agree with most here. It won't be long before TRU closes it's B&M stores and operates as just another online business.

and when you were a kid, you were smaller so tru seemed completely ginormous.
it's all in the perception. i remember they used to actually build the playsets and have them on display above the different toys' ailes...they would have a complete train set up on the wall, or a terror drome or whatever. I stole something cool from tru last week...just doing my part to bring down the man.

The changing desires of children (xbox, wii, ipod, etc.) do play some part in WHAT a store offers, but TRU seems to be shifting away from toys and more towards NON toy products. In my opinion they are starting to focus more on things like organic snack foods for children and toilet paper. I shit you not, my TRU has two huge stacks of TP, a stack of paper towels and a small aisle of organic snack foods. And like other's have said, they never seem to have the product people want, but loads of stuff that NOBODY wants. I can understand the baby related product, but some other things make me go "Seriously? Why?"

I really don't like going into TRU in Southern Cali there isn't many that are stocked appropriately, and now that the clone wars display is gone it's all toilet paper and laundry detergent.
