I keep getting calls from some california number (21 times between yesterday and today) and when I call the number back it says to get my number removed from the calling list I should press 1. Does that work? I also called my service provider and they told me to call the police and report it. Have you all dealt with this? Do I really have to call the cops?

I've had this problem a few times. Various places call for the person that used to have my phone number. That pressing one thing should work. If it doesn't then you can google the number and find out who it is and contact them. You can also check out this site: whocalled.us and find out if others have had trouble with that number. You should also put your number on the government's "do not call list." It really really works. Go to https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx and sign up. It's free and safe. I hope this helps, and good luck!
(this will probably get moved to the off topic section, yeah?)

i had the same call in spanish during the inoggeration. i called it back and i got the same crap about removing the number. which i wouldnt do. it is bad enough to call back those calls. its like giving your cell number away, and when you press to remove your number they ask what your number is, and they call you back reguardless fust for calling them back.
never type in your cell number ever anywhere in the world |

When I get calls from bill collectors I try to act as crazy as possible--I just start talking and don't stop for a bout 5 minutes, rambling on and on, then I ask them why I called them in the first place. It really throws them off.

Another great thing I love doing to telemarketers is to answer the phone and then lay it down next to the TV and walk away.

Telemarketers (before the Do Not Call List) used to call all the time. It got so bad they called late at night with things like "before you go to bed could I interest you in some new time saving kitchen items?" Pointing out how late it is doesn't work. Telling them nicely "no, thank you." doesn't work. Hanging up on them without a word doesn't work (but is very satisfying.) Threat of $10,000 fine from the do not call list? That works.
I did do the Seinfeld thing a few times, "give me your home number so I can call you back later." It really does throw them for a loop, like they've never heard that tied old joke before. Try it, then just hang up whie they're confused. By the way, looks like the original poster has left this thread for dead. Or maybe the bill collectors turned off his internet?? hm.
