Does anyone else find themselves in this situation?
I was just stopped for security reasons at my local Toys R Us. Why? Because I am in a toy store wearing a punk rock shirt and have tattoos? Because I am going through all the toys, digging through them to find the one I want (and then putting them back)? Because I have no child with me? Whatever it is in the past month there have been a couple of times when I was at that store and have had an employee shout "Code Geoffrey" over his walkie. Today they surrounded me and followed me to the door, with the manager standing there. WTF? I have spent a LOT of money there, never acted suspicious, never done anything out of the ordinary in even the slightest...well other than digging for what I want or asking some of the HELPFUL employees for something. Do I need to start going in there wearing a polo and khakis? If I did could I loot the place blind? Y'know they could just be doing their job and maybe I am an asshole for liking to wear t-shirts of bands I like, but in any event I am disgusted by my treatment at their hands. Oh and their prices suck.

"Code Geoffrey" is what they say when there's a shoplifter. They shouldn't really be saying it simply because they don't like the way you look. That's a bunch of horseshit.

i doubt your clothing has anything to do with it.
I always think people look suspicious hanging out by the same items for a long time...and holding items in their hands for a long time..walking around, then putting the items back on the shelf. When going to the back of the pegs, we suspiciously push our groin area up against the lower shelves where it would be more difficult for cameras to see what you're tucking away. It just LOOKS suspicious. Don't be so insulted if someone is suspicious of you. You didn't take anything so there's nothing to worry about. They are trying to prevent theft. Help them by not giving them a hard time. |

That's pretty crazy... I only wear rock shirts (seriously, nothing else) and they never even stop me to ask where my pants are.
But really, this doesn't seem quite right. Did they have an explanation for you? |

So what bands do you like? Could be there are other punks in the area who have ripped them off, or that your 'normal' behavior is a bit odd. I've never had an issue at any toy store when I've gone shopping. However when I worked retail there were certain groups of folk we would keep an eye on. Perhaps only 1 out of 100 folk fitting a stereotype is a bad cookie, but still need to keep that 1 from ripping ya off. Does sound like they went a bit overboard to surround you like that. Did they actually stop you and ask if you took something?

yeah, like I said, it's happened a couple of times. This time though one of the employees walked up to me, asked me if I needed assistance, I told him I didn't and right in front of me he pulled out the walkie and screamed "CODE GEOFFREY SECTION (whatever it is), I NEED ASSISTANCE" that threw me off a bit, I walk to the next aisle over (where the Transformers are) and no less than 5 employees come to the aisle, three more walk by....
Apparently they were expecting me to rip my clothes off pull out a bomb and assassinate Unicron. I was planning on buying something, but I just dropped it and walked out. HAHAHAH I just realized that the shirt I am wearing is for the band Integrity.....it has a blue bar on it that is about 7 inches tall and a foot long and in HUGE white letters on it says "INTEGRITY"

Don't think I ever dry humped a shelf to get at the items on the back of a peg. Though perhaps I just have longer arms. |

if that happened to me like that and I would just keep walking and if they put their hands on me I would go apesh*t. I dont care if I look suspicious or not they better have proof I stole something before they pull something like that on me.

Worked at TRU in college for a while and used to laugh when this one jackaß floor manager would jump on the Motorola.
Joked with some of the other "I'm just here for the paycheck, but since you're kind of a hot mom I think the toy you're looking for might be somewhere in my pants" employees that "Code Geoffrey" meant he was on his way to the store manager's office to give him a quick, well, how do I say this delicately...oh, yeah! Oral favor. TRU rules, but I have to say, I haven't heard the ol' "Code Geoffrey" in like 15 years. Thanks, you made my week! |
